Fantasyland's Sig anecdotes

Recommended Posts

It's 13 years old now, but I'm rereading Fantasyland by the Wall Street Journal's Sam Miller, in which a then winter meeting job seeking Sig Mejdal met him and became part of his Rotisserie front office for 2004 Tout Wars AL.  Among the juicy bits so far:

He had a SABR paper about how pitchers have a big influence on Caught Stealings (perhaps a TTTP guy himself)

He dubbed the PECOTA-type system he built for the team Zoladex, after a drug that chemically sterilizes those who take it, quipping of the other fantasy experts "we will not only separate them from their egos but also from their manhood."

When he was the commissioner of his office fantasy league, he conceded of some of his colleagues, "The orbit analysts!  They were tough."

The first time he got into a spring training clubhouse, his first question to Jarrod Washburn was why his opponent batting average is so much lower for the first hitter he faces in an inning than for subsequent ones?

Miller describes Sig getting to listen to a Billy Beane presser "with the sort of expression last seen in the Kool-Aid line at Jonestown".  (Sig's Astros have had it good over Beane's A's the last few years).

When an astrologer who wanted to consult for a team joined them at a game and explained she's so unique, front offices don't realize they need me yet, he added "Me too."

It was his last year out of the game - the epilogue tells of his switch from NASA to the Cardinals for the 2005 season.

There were a few other miscellaneous anecdotes giving the overall impression he's a pretty cool guy, bon vivant is the label Miller chose in summary.
