Sisco/Sucre/Severino

Recommended Posts

There’s been some discussion about the new catching pick up being a harbinger of doom for Sisco.

I can’t see how that’s really possible, because Severino doesn’t have time to learn the pitching staff before the season opens. I have no illusions about Sisco being a great catcher, but there’s no reason not to let him play, at least to start the season. He can always be replaced later. My question is about Sucre, however.

As I understand it, Sucre was requested to not exercise his opt out, Supposedly because he was going to make the team but they were waiting to make the final roster shuffle so the guy who got designated would have a bigger chance of making it through waivers. The very next day they go out and get Severino and put him on the 40 man.

If I understand that correctly, and if Sucre is now in danger of being, released, I guess, doesn’t that kind of make the front office look a little bit shady?

I’m not looking for demons where there are none, any clarification would be welcome. But if I’m understanding the sequence properly, it sure doesn’t look very honorable.

We don’t really know what happened or what the O’s will do with Sucre, but assuming that Severino first went on the waiver wire today, I don’t think the O’s can be blamed for claiming him just because they encouraged Sucre to opt in.    They had no way to know Severino would become available.   In any event, if they intend to keep Severino over Sucre (which I tend to doubt) they should offer to release Sucre and then there’s no issue.

The Nats have major league veteran Cs Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki so it certainly wasn't a shock that Severino didn't make the team.   Now I guess he had to clear all the NL teams on waivers before getting to us so maybe that was unexpected?

I;ve heard it guessed that the Orioles will DFA Severino and look to outright him.

If the Orioles put Severino on waivers, what are the odds the Royals make a claim since they lost their catcher?

They hired a real catcher.

This could go many ways, but I don’t think of this move as shady in any way. Severino is a tremendous talent, defensively. They could turn around and DFA him tomorrow. They could take him North and option Chance. Perhaps they DFA Severino a month or two from now and bring back Wynns from the IL or Chance from AAA.

It would not be ideal to take a catcher like this North with no time catching your staff, but so be it. Sucre seems to be a lock, and from what I’ve seen, he may be our best catcher defensively in some time. The way he receives the ball is outstanding. So, if Chance went North, would he get the at bats he needs? Is Chance better off going to AAA to get the reps and ab’s? I think so, for now.

I don't think they are better off at AAA.  Best instructors are at the ML level right?

I think you send a kid who has ML experience and is putting up a 1200 OPS in ST down you are sending him the wrong message.

There are so many ways this could go now it's pretty impossible to predict what they will do. I can't call it!

Take hold.  Be bold!    I think it's Chance and Jesus.  PTL!  😇

    • Lets look at both Santander and Nunez offensively at 26 years old Season WOBA WOBACON Barrel % Hard Hit % Exit Velo XBA XSLG XWOBA XWOBACON Renato Nunez .341 .453 12.1 36.4 86.3 .228 .433 .301 .388 Anthony Santander .358 .404 10.2 36.7 88.6 .286 .510 .338 .378 MLB AVG .317 .370 6.4 34.9 88.3 .250 .414 .321 .376 They are not significantly different though Santander is ahead in the most important OBA and especially XWOBA categories.  The key here is defensively value and cost. Santander is a switch hitting plus defensive RFer while Nunez is a DH. If Nunez played any position effectively, he'd be offered arbitration. Santander's issues have been staying healthy and he doesn't walk much, but then again, he doesn't strike out all that much either. Overall, Santander is a more valuable player than Nunez and this is coming from a guy who think Nunez is worth more than obviously the rest of baseball does.
    • Late to this thread but here's mine. Santander I don't expect any more than he gave us this year before he got hurt. But that's ok. A whole healthy year, that's a solid MLer. Hays... health is the biggest question. Total wrench in the gears. In a full year I would expect BIG things from him. He's not going to hit 30 HRs, but he might hit 30+ doubles and steal 30 bases. Play a stellar CF. I like Austin a lot! For a CFer he's what you want, a take charge guy. If there's a Bermuda Triangle pop up, and he can get to it, he will scream out and call everyone off. I noticed that from his first few games up. Not intimidated when he hit the bigs.
    • The original recording has a girl speaking Spanish in the background in a sexy voice. Like 40% the volume of Burdon. At one point she says in English "Are you listening to this?" Right after 3 minutes in. This 45... on the MGM label!
    • YouTube came up with another of my favorites. That I have history with. 40 years ago my sisters and my cousins would listen to this 45 record endlessly! I was blown away by this song at 11 or 12 years old. Then 20ish years ago I found this live video online and was blown away a second time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i0DMbCKnAg click it
    • I don't know how other folks classify this... avant garde? To me this is Punk. Like Devo. An influence on Devo!
    • Then what makes you think another team would give us value for him?
