Who’s your choice for most pleasant surprise of 2019?

Recommended Posts

Hopefully there’s at least one pleasant surprise player on the O’s in 2019.     Who’ve you got?

I think I’ll go with Rio Ruiz.   He won’t make anyone forget Manny, but I say he’ll play solid D and put up a .750ish OPS.

Ruiz is a good one. I want to see more of him!

The success of both Rule 5’s definitely and Dwight Smith Jr looks good so far.

Joey Rickard.  I think he will be our best two-way player in 2019.

On the pitching side, I'm going to go with Andrew Cashner.  I think the analytics will help him. He has enough command and enough stuff that he shouldn't be as bad as he's been over his career.

Not sexy picks by any means, but going with my gut.

And people doubt this team will lose 100 games again.

I am encouraged by Rickard’s spring, but he needs to back it up when the real games start.

I’ll go with Richie Martin.

I’ll say Smith, Severino, and Ruiz will all prove to be solid pickups. No superstars but good all around players that will seem to have come out of nowhere.

Just for fun I’ll pick a pitcher. Let’s say...Mike Wright. I am vocal about my dislike for the guy and I don’t necessarily believe it...but if he ends up with something like 160 IP at a 4.50 ERA I will be pleasantly surprised.

Along those lines, I'm going to go with Chris Davis with a modest bounce back to .800 OPS. Maybe the analytics tell him to hit opposite field or change his swing.

I also think Drew Jackson is a nugget and is somehow starting by the end of the year, either at 2B when Villar is traded, or in CF.
