Ryan Mountcastle 2019

I think it's time.  He now has 499 PA at the AAA level where he has been remarkably consistent and has over 2,000 total minor league PAs.  I am as concerned about the walk rates as anybody but it seems clear at this point he isn't going to progress in that aspect while facing AAA pitching.  I also do not think that Mountcastle will turn into the caliber of player where we should be that worried about service time.

Nothing’s going to happen before Sept. 1.

I'd like to see him move up after the AAA season ends. It's been fun following him there this season. He's up to 5th in the league in average and fourth in RBIs.

I agree, what I meant when I said "I think it's time" is that it should be this September and not next June.  Giving him 650-700 AAA PA before a call-up seems like overkill to me.

Remember, it only takes about two weeks to extend his service time by a year.    I keep reading people say “keep him down until May to preserve his service time,” but he doesn’t need to be held back that long (if the O’s are playing that game).    So it’s not 650-700 PA, it’s  whatever he accrues this season plus another 60ish next year.

PS - I’m talking about service time needed to reach free agency.    It does take until late May/early June to delay arbitration eligibility down the road, but I have never thought that game was worth playing.

If I were one of these players, I would never sign an extension with an organization that played service time games with my career.

Right, I was referring to the amount of time to keep him down to delay arbitration eligibility.  I agree it's not a game worth playing.

Mountcastle walk!

I know we make fun of him on this point, but the fact is he’s walked 7 times in August, which is more than he walked in June/July combined.

That's fine. Taking walks it taking walks. Even if you're pitched around it shows you're being a little more selective.

Yeah you would. If you were one of those players, you'd understand how the business works instead of making armchair calls from your house.

It’s a business for the player too. And the organization is taking a year off of their income earning career.

I’m not nearly as concerned about the walks as most. He’s young and has time to develop. He’s got so much talent. He’ll need to grow in taking walks to maximize his potential, but I’m okay with that coming a little later in his development process.

Sure.  Certainly don't want him swinging at junk.

They need to change the rules so that  this doesn't happen anymore.  Base free agency on age of the player that way it doesn't matter.
