It's Time - Mountcastle

No way! Not when the team ERA is well over 6 and Davis still on the roster. Plus, Trumbo is coming at some point...I'd let him dominate AAA...Has anyone really done that at Norfolk yet?

Is Trumbo coming?

I don't think we see Mountcastle or Diaz this season but I think there is a good chance to see Hays.   They would have to keep him in the minors for 49 days in 2020 to get a extra year.   If he gets healthy and is hitting after 49 days into this season I think he could be promoted.

I hope you're right. No offense to the guys on the current roster, but outside of Mancini and Villar it feels a lot like a replacement level team. I'd much rather watch guys who could possibly be part of our future lose games then guys who probably won't be on the roster next season.

I would be surprised myself if Mountcastle isn’t on the team at some point this year. So unless they keep him down next year to make up his time up here this year than this isn’t a service time decision.

We are still very early in the season. No rush.

I would really like to see Mountcastle up in June or so if he's still hitting well. I understand the idea of holding him back until next year. We're not going anywhere after all, but its rare youngsters come up and are like Soto or Acuna. They typically have growing pains and its a lot easier to allow them to work through those pains in a season like this than in one that means something. I'd very much like to see an August lineup with Hays, Diaz, and Mountcastle. Maybe it's me being greedy as a fan and wanting something worth watching, but it is what it is.

Why waste youth. It's the best of skill sets.

I would counter with, why waste a year of controllability on a lost season when the best outcome is the worse record in baseball so you can get the 1st pick in next year's draft?

There is absolutely no reason to rush him. I'd like to see him be a AAA all-star and hit 30 homers and drive in 100 at Norfolk and have him ready to be a rookie next year.

He isn't going to hit 30 home runs at Norfolk.  Mancini was two years older and only hit 13 home runs at Norfolk.

Only two players have hit 20+ homers for Norfolk since it became an Orioles affiliate: Pedro Alvarez hit 26 in 2017, and Michael Aubrey hit 22 in 2010.     If Mountcastle hit 15 that would be a very impressive feat.

Wow, Michael Aubrey.  Love when I hear some of these blasts from the past!

This writer for MLB.com agrees.

Orioles: Call up Ryan Mountcastle

First off, that name! Also, Yusniel Diaz is on the injured list right now, so Mountcastle, the No. 67 prospect per MLB Pipeline, can be the guy who represents a brighter future for Orioles fans. Also, how do you not sell MOUNTCASTLE jerseys?

I can't say the piece is worth your time if you're a slow reader.

well in the last 10 games since this thread was started he's only hitting .429.

Can Trumbo just not come back and give Mountcastle a shot instead.

Would make more sense if some of our better hitters this year weren’t Mancini and Nunez. Or if he could play a position.

I'm guessing he could be at least as good as Mancini in the outfield.  Evidently he's picking up first pretty well.

He's not Curran.

    • 44,003 for the last three games for 1.3 million.Paid attendance should be close.Really nothing to be excited about but understandable. The last two years the Orioles have lost more games at home then any time ever in a 162 game season. Not sure if it is ever..Mets and Tigers both lost 107 at home consecutively . Tough to watch such bad home team baseball. Still would be the worst average hone attendance since 1978 and of course worst ever at Camden Yards.
    • Do you have a link to this pipeline article?
    • Haha I had totally forgotten.
    • I have the same issues, bad back (and down my right leg) and rotator cuffS. Doesn't wake me up tho. Yes, because of beer I sleep like a baby. I do however wake up start awake many times after 5 or 6 hours. Just from deep sleep to wide awake. I've learned to just get up, fire up my computer and waste some time, Not one drop of coffee. Take my morning drugs, several of which help or cause sleep. Go back to bed in 2 hours or stay up and take a nap in the afternoon. Tossing and turning in bed is never going to be sleep. I can't multi quote it right but I like waking up and having to go to the potty. Every night please! Let's play two! Makes the night seem longer to me.
    • Good points Drungo! I like the idea of working backwards from the desired outcomes of a system. Goal 1: Service time should no longer be a deciding factor in free agency or player promotion. I think automatic free agency after the age 27 season would be good (or after age 23 if they've never made it to the majors), with a better compensation system worked out between the team that signs and the team that loses the guy in free agency. Maybe a % of the contract value? Goal 2: Significantly reduce the bloated, inefficient system. Limit minor league affiliates to 2 full season teams, 1 short season team, and whatever overseas academies they want. Pay the minor leaguers better. Cut the draft in half (20 rounds).
    • As long as it isn't DJ on horseback! Otherwise I'd worry that the ball would hit the horse square in the forehead, risking career-ending injury to the glove (not whip)-wielding jockey as its knees buckled.
