While posting the stats over that period, I noticed that they also had in common a high K/BB ratio. A lot of them have strikingly low walk rates.

It looks like the last few HS schoolers and the Redshirt Mine Engineer might be interesting. Not being Luke.

I'd say that has been less of a problem. Trading them before age 27 maybe.

Well, some of those under 27ers looked better after they left, but either way, I hope the new approach yields even better development.

To expound on Jon’s comments, I don’t think you need to target ceiling when your first pick has best catcher in baseball ceiling and your second pick has 55/55 hit power SS ceiling. That’s a lot of ceiling right there.

What Jon is saying “to me” is exactly what this organization needed.  We needed a solid draft.

Get em in get em signed get em having fun together.

If teams got 2 All-Stars, and 2 solid contributors a year from the 40 player draft each and every year combined with 6 years of service time you'd theoretically have a roster (24 at least) always from the draft.  Clearly FA happens and you don't always get #1 overall... and there's lots of misses.  It seems like 2 is a good target.  Also makes me wonder about the 3 guy draft the Mets did and if it does make more sense considering the number of misses throughout the 40.  Guess in a few years we'll see how it worked for them.

2 high ceiling guys and a lot of potential solid contributors is nice.  As players/minors improve hopefully if helps the overall competition and balance as well.  Clearly that's every teams goal, but hopefully Elias can do that both here and internationally.

Some interesting breakdowns of the types of players we picked, and a few tidbits from Elias.    One thing he did say was that the draft isn’t completely synced up with the player development side yet.   In the future they’ll be drafting guys with a more specific idea of how they plan to develop them.

Thanks for this, I was looking for certain traits, especially with pitchers, but don’t find those traits in a large enough quantity to mark a trend.

    • Just talking about the general trend that analytic teams realize that arms are more risky, so they're ranking gets slightly dinged to compensate for that. He also didn't pick a pitcher until the 8th round last year. Things like on base skills are harder to mold using modern training, places like driveline are much more effective for pitchers.
    • I guess so.  If they want to have Mize paired with Lacy/Hancock, it's hard to argue with.  Tork does seem to be the consensus #1 pick though.  I am curious when the last time there was a player previously thought to be the consensus #1 pick who didn't go first overall.
    • Saw a mock draft with us taking Martin and left drafting pitcher Nick Swiney at 30 https://prospects365.com/2020/05/25/ray-butlers-2020-mlb-mock-draft/
    • The Frobster beat me to posting the Melewski interview by 13 minutes.   The article mentions the Os in on quality international prospects that we knew about including Samuel Basallo and Maikol Hernandez and one that I am not sure I have seen mentioned with the Os here - Wilmer Feliciano who will get a signing bonus just under $500k and has big left-handed power.  A reminder that none of these guys are signed, just apparently committed or agreed to the Os until they are signed. It seems like a very strong group of elite prospects given how late our current FO was to the game of signing this upcoming J2 class.   The payoff from these guys is likely years away, but I think there is a chance last year's class and this year's class should start impacting our top 30 prospects entering 2021.  How optimistic is it to think predict our next international signing to reach our top 10 would be by 2022?
    • Don’t have a subscription, but here’s an interview the author, Ben Badler, gave to Steve Melewski.   https://www.masnsports.com/steve-melewski/2020/06/baseball-americas-ben-badler-on-os-international-effort-video.html At the end of the video, Badler speculates that the next CBA will create an international draft.   He thinks the players will posture about and then “maybe they’ll trade it for a few extra inches of legroom on the bus.”    LOL!
    • Bad quality vid but its the only one that I found that shows Frohwirth's side of it. Back in that era Martinez grabs some pine 9 out of 10 times with that pitch.
