Btw I was looking at the signings from 2010, maybe it’s me but these were terrible wastes of cash.

Carlos Martinez has produced notably more surplus value than the entirety of those bonuses by himself.

Then there is Candelario and Alfaro.

Why is that?

It would decrease both the owners expenses and the number of International players getting an opportunity to play in MLB/MiLB.

Which is why MLB allows the early deals and other shady practices, they are trying to push teams/public opinion towards an international draft.

It is surprising to me how many fans are in favor of a draft.

Why would it lower the opportunities because it would be one time a year?

The last thing the MiLB kids need is another way for the owners to screw them over. It's bad enough the NA kids have to deal with this slot stupidity in the current draft.

Do you know that at one point Puerto Rico was exempt from the draft?  When it was added to the draft we went a good long while without any impact players coming out of Puerto Rico.

Imagine you are an owner of a ML team.  Does it make any difference to you if every team gets players out of the DR or if no team gets players out of the DR?  I'm going to say it doesn't make a difference to you.  As long as it even.

Imagine you are an owner of a ML team.  Why pay for an academy if there is a draft?  What's in it for you?  Just draft 20 kids and slap on your DSL team.

Imagine you are a Buscone.  Sure you are not a nice guy but a lot of kids would end up with nothing if it wasn't for your efforts.  If there is draft you need to find a new line of work, no profit for you in a draft.

Imagine you are a young player.  You know your whole family is depending on you.  You are smart enough to know you probably won't make it, that this signing bonus is the ticket for you and your family.  How would you like your free agency to be replaced with a draft position and a slot payment?

As a general guideline fans should be very suspicious of anything ownership pushes for.  We know they are not concerned with player welfare.

It’s something that would enable their team to compete with other teams on an even playing field. Everyone gets a pick and everyone gets a player.

How is it not even now?

Just because the team we favor didn't put in the work?

It's pretty even for the other 29 teams.

Come on man, that’s not hard to see.

You think Adley Rutschman would have the same odds of being an Oriole unless he was PUT here?

So what teams does the current system favor and which have it harder?

Please don't include the O's since we know they are a special case.

Arizona, Texas, and Yankees have invested heavily and are the source of most international players in the league.

Detroit, Milwaukee... they’re garbage on the international front.

    • Bleier trade continues to bite the O's last night.  Fry  could not find the plate especially against right-handed batters. Needing to face three batter in not Fry's game.    It didn't affect the outcome because the O's didin't  hit.  However, Fry does not look up to being the 2nd lefties in the pen  which shows how much the O's miss Bleier.  Fry would be a candidate to be sent down but there is no lefty to replace him so he will probably stay in the majors.
    • SummerSlam ‘92 is on FS1.  Quarantine + Nostalgia = Mullet for backwardsk ?
    • I missed another game. My sleep schedule sleep patterns are SOOOOOOOO screwed up... I laid down for a quick nap before the game about 4:30. When I woke up at MIDNIGHT I had missed the entire thing. Turned on the TV to watch the 11:30 replay and THANK GOD the Gnats are back playing! They're the replay tonight... fml     So.... I'm not going to read the thread or the board. Or Roch. It's 1:30 am. I'm having my "morning" glass of coffee (yes BIG TALL GLASS) and I'm going to watch the 9 am MASN replay "live". So I have THAT going for me. 🙃 GO O'S!!!!
    • And now for something completely different...   NSFW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpx_VXRG_qc
    • Now that does make sense: greater risk, greater reward. So do healthy pitchers make more than healthy batters? Serious question.
    • On his pro-rated salary, Cobb would earn @ $4.5MM the rest of this season. That would be nothing for a contending team to take on if they were sold on him putting them over the top. But I can't imagine being so desperate on August 4, 10 games into a 60 game season if I were a decision maker to take on the entirety of his contract.  If a team really wants to gamble a little bit of cash on Cobb to win this year's WS, they may be wrangled into taking half the burden on the 2021 salary, while the Orioles pay half of this season's $4.5MM remaining. This is starting to sound too good to be true!
