Hyde sounds angry O's lose 7-2

Recommended Posts

Hyde not too pleased with his pitchers last night:

”Broken record. It sucks. It’s not even the big boys, either, which is pretty scary. They have a ton of power that’s not even in their lineup and they’ve hit 11 homers in two nights without (Giancarlo) Stanton and Edwin (Encarnación) and Gleyber (Torres) has got the side issue. So the other guys are hitting homers off our pitchers.

“It just shows you how long we have to go to be a competitive team in the American League East, and to have the pitching to be able to compete. Their guys are just way better than our guys.”

I do appreciate that Hyde actually tells it how it is and doesn't sugar coat everything. I've been happy with Hyde and his staff this year. Not sure if he'll be the manager for the next O's playoff team, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I've never seen a more homer-prone pitcher than Hess in my life. He doesn't even really have that bad of stuff.

I like Hyde's occasional candor, but I don't think much of him as an in-game manager. Maybe he'll get better with some experience. And I realize that he's hampered by an overtaxed bullpen, a short bench, and a Rule 5 guy and Chris Davis taking up two spots.

Nonetheless, I don't think the 2019 version of Hyde is a guy you'd want managing a team in a pennant race (if we ever do get there).

What can we even learn about his in-game management this season? There's nothing to manage, everyone is pretty bad.

Yeah this is where I'm at. I do think he has to learn where the players fit better and didn't know just from not being here (example Givens is a set up man). But when I think I don't like his bullpen management...I look at the bullpen and just laugh because there really is no management of this bullpen to improve it the slightest.

I'm guessing Hyde is more upset about the pitchers giving up 7 walks versus 6 strikeouts, than the home runs given up last night. The pitchers location in the strikezone has to improve. You can't bring in Hess against the Yankees and not expect him to give up home runs.

Well duh...

But Hyde is the guy who sent Hess out in the 9th inning. I’ve been told that Elias is in charge of the roster, both 25 and 40. So Hyde has the guys he has. But he should be either screaming and shaking fists or on his knees begging for some personell changes.

I don't know how I feel about a manager straight up saying that the players on his team aren't good enough - or that they aren't trying hard enough. Not really a good message to the players you have out there and are hoping to succeed.

I don't think that's an admirable quality, or even telling-it-like-it-is. Everyone knows the Yankees have a better roster than the Orioles. It's just bad clubhouse relations. If there's an issue, do it privately. I see no benefit coming from Hyde's angry outbursts.

I think Hyde would lose a clubhouse of veterans pretty quick if he continued to do his "not enough effort, appreciate the opportunity" stuff publicly.

True, but that's not this team or next year's team, and who knows about 2021.

Honestly, I can’t tell.    I feel like Buck would have gotten more out of our bullpen guys, but who knows?    Hyde doesn’t have a lot of great options out there.
