Bradford traded to Tampa Bay for player to be named later

Recommended Posts

I'd be surprised if anyone more than a Scott Moore-type prospect. This has salary dump written all over it. Now if someone would just claim Jamie Walker we'd be gold. :D

But don't you think if AM were simply willing to dump Bradford, it would have happened before the deadline?

Press Release:

The Orioles today announced that RHP CHAD BRADFORD was assigned to the Tampa Bay Rays via a waiver claim for a player to be named later.

Bradford, 33, was 3-3 with a 2.45 ERA (40.1IP, 11ER) in 47 relief appearances for the Orioles this season. He has appeared in 68 or more games in five of the past six seasons and he finished third among American League relievers with 78 appearances for the Orioles in 2007.

Bradford signed a three-year contract with the Orioles as a free agent on November 30, 2006.

Thanks for the info Tony...

I am pleased to see AM will deal within the division, and here's hoping we get someone solid in return. :)

This was a logical move, nice to clear some salary. Hopefully the PTBNL is more than just a random AA arm.

I'll be a little sad to see Bradford go, though. I'll always have a soft spot for submariners, sidearmers, knuckleballers, and the like.

We just cleared $3.5 million off our payroll for next year. With the additions of ground ball guys like Jim Johnson and Randor Bierd, who can both actually get left-handers out as well, Bradford had become a little redundant. Besides, Bradford had become almost strictly a right-handed specialist and I'm not sure anyone wants him in a tight situation anymore since even right-handers have become to hit him a little more this year.

I'm a big Randor Bierd fan (and Tony-OH too, for that matter), but southpaws are hitting .342 off him.

Anyway, good luck to Bradford and thanks for the memories. He served the team well, but I'm not crying to see him go. When the Mets let him walk, they did so in part because they felt he loses effectiveness the more he's seen around the league. I think there's something to that, though I wish him nothing but success against teams not named the Orioles.

You could be right. I just keep going back to AM's statement that he wasn't going to make a trade just to add depth. It needed to fill a need. Some how, some way I hope a SS is at the end of this deal. Either way, the $3.5 off the books is a good thing.

I'm going to go on record as saying this is more than a salary dump.

There it is. On record.

I think we're getting something useful back, and I think the Rays may have overvalued Bradford (in part based on his ERA).

I can't believe he got all the way to the Rays, that is really surprising to me. A guy who always has a good ERA and against who it takes two or three baserunners in an inning to score a run...I'll miss his reliability, big time!

Good luck Chad!

Probably sometime in November or so.

Wow. It's going to stink to have to wait that long. Why can't they just announce it now? I never really understood this waiver stuff.
