Other Significant Orioles

Recommended Posts

I’m pretty new to the Orioles family, joining basically after Game 162 in 2011.

I’ve heard a lot of names mentioned over the next years that go along with the few I already knew, that everyone knows: Palmer, RobinsonX2, Powell, Ripken & Ripken, among others.

But what other Orioles should I read up on? I just read Melvin Mora’s bio, and he was a really fine player. I never knew.

I have a wonderful book called “the ball clubs” which covers every single team recognized by MLB, but is there a specific book devoted to the Orioles?

I have a book called The Orioles Encyclopedia, which was published in 2009, covering all the Orioles' history from 1954 up through the 2008 season.  I'm not sure how easy it would be to get your hands on a copy at this late date, but it would fill you in on everything up to three years before you started following the club.

You named four of the five players whose statues stand in Legends Park at Camden Yards (I'm not counting Earl Weaver as a player).  If you want one name of an Oriole to start reading up on, I would suggest the only player in Legends Park that you didn't name - Eddie Murray.

John Eisenberg wrote an excellent book about the entire histroy of the franchise, logs of it derived from interviews with people who lived it.    Highly recommend it.

I'll also toot my own horn a bit and point you to a thread I did the offseason before last, where I counted down what I considered to be the top 100 most significant dates in Orioles history.   Reading my posts, and even moreso the discussion they generated, can give you a good feel for the history of the ballclub.

Thank you very much! Inwill

look is the book you mentioned, And repay the favor with a recommendation of my own, look up the book, “seasons in hell” by Mike Shropshire. It’s about the early Texas rangers, and oh my God I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. He was there beat writer for several years, and he relates all the anecdotes from his time with them, blue language and all.
