Orioles trade Cashner to Red Sox

I pray pray pray they give real answers instead of spouting Duquette-isms.

He has thus far...in a frank and transparent fashion.  I have not heard a Duquette-ism from him....He seems quite confident in his process of analytic decision  making, feels he has little reason to obscure this reasoning and has offered this very openly to us fans so far.

And to think I was just having a disagreement with folks that didn't think it was possible that the Orioles would prioritize shedding payroll.

I want to know if the Red Sox are on the hook for his as yet unpaid signing bonus.

Yep sounds like they didn't want to risk his option vesting.

Apparently, the Phillies were the only other team in on him. I guess Elias thought the Red Sox offer was better.

Now the question is, is Cashner going to retire?

I like the deal.  By getting players this young, we can let them grow in our system and play our way.  As opposed to older, higher level, flawed players which is what  more "traditional" return for Cashner would have looked like.

Elias is putting his money where his mouth is.

And shedding it from his payroll at the same time!

If he retires, we don't have to pay him, and they could probably fight him on the bonus money.

I'm a bit disappointed if this is the return they got after eating some of the money.

I don't think he retires, I think it was an empty threat to try and get some leverage.

Why do people keep calling it a rental? Unless he doesn’t start his option will kick in.

Last I checked he wasn't on pace for it to vest.  Red Sox can manipulate his starts to keep it from vesting pretty easily.

I thought it was just something he said for the hometown fans.

Cashner is far from a hot commodity. He’s been good this year but he’s a rental that’s not a game-changer.

Eh...I don’t disagree, but if the Red Sox make the playoffs and he contributes, it’s a game changer. Too early to tell if I like the deal. Don’t even know if we got rid of money. Sounds like we ate some.

He'd have to average 7.2 innings in each of his last 12 starts for it to vest. Unlikely.
