...for literally everyone else.... Brad Brach DFA by Cubs. Thoughts? 馃

I wouldn't mind seeing him back.聽 He might not know too many players on the team though.聽

He has a 5 million dollar option next year with a 100,000 dollar buyout for 2020, so they could claim him now and treat the final two months as a tryout for next season, where he could be a possible trade chip.

Ultimately I don't see them paying that much for a reliever though

Once he's released by the Cubs, I could see him signing a minor-league contract with a contender hoping to get him back to form and bring him up in September. He pitched well with the Braves last year.

Bingo. I wouldn鈥檛 mind bringing Brach back and giving him a defined role as 7th-8th inning guy. Only Armstrong and Fry have made the most of opportunities this year.聽

Brach is 33 years old and has no聽ties to Elias/Hyde. 聽 I don't see him being an Oriole again.

Maybe a minor league coach a few years down the road if he decides to walk that path.聽 As a player?聽 Agreed, not in a million years.

    • Those 3 things do matter鈥ut MD is the destination of those local kids. 聽Recruiting is so different now, especially with the power of social media. 聽 聽 There are tons of attractive urban areas, so that really isn鈥檛 much of a factor overall. 聽It may help vs some Midwest school in podunk but up against a lot of the power 5 teams, not as much. Lots of schools have top notch facilities. 聽 I mean, look at their recruiting rankings. They have had 1 top 10 Class in the last decade. 聽They had聽more classes ranked outside the top 35 than inside the top 20. 聽 聽 Had you asked me 5+ years ago, I would have agreed it was a top 25 job. 聽It鈥檚 just not聽the case anymore. 聽
    • First of all, the current state of the program absolutely matters and it matters a hell of a lot more than MDs title in 2002. Would those schools out hire? 聽Maybe..money is important and the Terps haven鈥檛 had any. BTw, I meant Texas Tech, not Texas A&M. 聽Now, we will see what TT does after losing Beard but that鈥檚 been a really good program recently. FSU has been a far better program than MD for a solid 5-10 years. 聽It鈥檚 not聽close. 聽They have had several first round picks, highly ranked recruiting classes and lots of tourney success, not to mention being one of the winningest programs in the ACC. Your last sentence is just wrong. 聽The idea that you think it鈥檚 clear is absurd. They have limited recent success(especially in March), not much national appeal, no money and聽no real high end picks to point to in the league recently. 聽 聽 Like I said, the right coach can elevate the program back to what you are saying鈥ut as we talk now, as the job is looked at by recruits, etc鈥t鈥檚 not there anymore. 聽Things can change. 聽
    • I'm pretty sure these guys call the Summer Eve's Douche Bowl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=522H44ddePQ
    • Being the number one destination by a long shot in an area with top 5 amateur talent still matters. Being in an attractive major urban area still matters. Having top notch facilities and fan base still matters. Leaving the ACC hurt the programs standing.聽 But there's a reason the school has had such sustained stretches of success in the past.聽 Even under Turgeon the team was generally a top 25ish team. If you get fired for being generally top 25ish, that's because people have higher expectations for the program.聽 And they should.聽 Because the school has all the advantages to be a top 20 team annually.聽聽 Now, that's not saying this hire will end up well for MD.聽 They could conceivably get worse.聽 But that won't be because of the program's potential.
    • I think you're looking at it the wrong way by placing too much emphasis on the current state of the program.聽 I of course don't think thry are currently a聽top-25 program.聽 But Maryland was able to lure away P5 coaches from schools that are on your list for their last 2 coaching hires, including during a time when they were facing NCAA sanctions.聽 On top of that,聽they聽were聽really close to luring away a coach (Sean Miller) from a program that I had listed as better than us.聽 That's fact, not theory.聽 I don't believe for a second that Turgeon's tenure here dropped the desirability of this job down to where we aren't still close to that level, nor do I think that the other schools closed the gap so significantly that we are worse than all of them. 聽 Let's look at it another way.聽 If Iowa lost its coach and were looking for a coach this offseason, would they beat us out in terms of hires?聽 Would TAMU?聽 聽Would Alabama?聽 Would USC?聽 With Iowa and TAMU I feel very strongly thay they wouldn't. Especially since we already poached one coach from TAMU.聽 Alabama?聽 Maybe depending on how much a coach values environment over Benjamin's, but I also don't think Alabama would pay a coach top dollar unless it's someone like Nate Oats and has proven success with the program.聽 USC?聽 Only for someone who wants to be in LA.聽 FSU?聽 Absolutely not.聽 Auburn?聽 similar to Alabama IMO but maybe more tilted in favor of Auburn.聽 Arkansas?聽 Debatable as well. 聽 Regardless there are enough schools on this list where I think Maryland comes out clearly ahead in聽this exercise that I feel comfortable putting this HC position as a top-25 job.
    • Well, Westry is out. 聽Smith hurt his ankle And Young was sick. 聽It could mean they just want more depth and that none of them are out. The McCrary thing is interesting. 聽Wonder if they give him carries tomorrow?
