Why did Davis go after Hyde? He was not happy.

That is what is called a "throwing error."

..and first basemen are supposed to be able to scoop balls out of the dirt or on the bounce. You know, like LeMahieu and Ford did all series for the Yankees. Davis used to scoop balls like that effortlessly. The throw could have been higher, but it wasn't a terrible throw and should have been caught. He then casually walked after the ball instead of hustling to get it.

He's not wrong. But I don't see how his comments are going to encourage the current players on this team to try their best when their manager is straight up saying that they aren't good enough to compete.

Straight up, the manager is the manager. He's in charge. It's completely understandable for him to be frustrated, but you don't vent publicly. Because you're the manager. You're supposed to be the leader, set the example, and be in charge.

I'd rather he be straight as opposed to constantly making excuses and deflecting like Buck used to do.

This is how I see it playing out.

1) Suspended for 3 games

2) Benched for the rest of the season

3) Released in the off-season

Honestly we can't flat out bench him for a significant amount of time when we have a 2- or 3- man bench.  Guys need days off here and there.  If he's not suspended and is on the roster and we have a 13 or 14 man pitching staff, he's gotta play some.

But they are still throwing errors. They are not fielding errors. When firstbasemen scoop balls, they are adding value. Missing scoops can not be considered a negative when they are trying to make lemonade out of shitty throws that are rightfully ruled errors.

Yeah after looking at the replay again on the Villar error, Davis really dogged it on that scoop attempt. Davis didn't even need to stretch out, he just did the ole with his glove and missed the ball. Davis use to stretch out into a full split when scooping out throws for Manny.

No, they are doing their jobs. That's what good first basemen do. They don't miss balls thrown right at them very often. Yankee first basemen made those plays all series long for their infielders. It is a negative when your first basemen can't make those plays, but they are throwing errors. That's not even the point. The point is it's a play the first baseman has to make.

That's the point. There's no excuse for him not catching that ball. It was a pathetic effort topped off by walking casually after the ball instead of running to get it.

That looked way worse after watching it a second time. That was a typical play that 99 out of 100 times a real 1B will make. It was a play that you see a 1B make nearly every game and usually more than once.

Destroying bats, a la Bo Jackson, or fighting managers and/or teammates. I have not heard of Davis doing the latter. Until Hyde...

...until the absence of Showalter.

There were four plays you can critique Davis for in the span of two or three innings.

1. Not running for a ball that might have been catchable in the first row or two of first base foul territory.

2. Basket catching Castro's flip into his shoulder to end the fourth.

3. Weird footwork and lack of hustle on Villar's bad throw.

4. And a showboaty shovel flip to Castro in the fifth.

He did not play hard today.

I'm on Hyde's side if he's needling Davis at every opportunity for his poor performance. I would be pissed off too if I was in his shoes and saddled with a $23 million/year player giving less than optimal effort.
