Paying the Troll Toll

Recommended Posts

I'm a pretty easy-going guy (or so I'm told).  I try my best to not judge others with a harsh eye, unless it becomes obvious that it's warranted.  I love coming here at the OH and places like Twitter to engage in meaningful and/or enjoyable discussion.  What takes away from these positive experiences are trolls.  I don't understand what drives a person to scour a site for posts to mock, with every intention of drawing embarrassing attention to their target or to just start an argument for the sake of arguing.  There are posters here that do it so regularly that it agitates me to the point of feeling the need to post about it.  I get that I can put these folks on ignore, but I've found that people reply to them often, so I wind up seeing their posts anyway.

It goes against my nature to seek out hurting anyone... even online.  Online, for me, is the same as real life.  I treat others how I wish to be treated.  It's one of the main reasons I have been transparent at nearly every site I've ever used by using my real name.  I'm not saying that using an alias is inappropriate AT ALL.  It's a personal choice and it's quite understandable that most seek privacy/safety from a multitude of potential dangers out there.  But adults, again- adults, spending much of their time ridiculing others or trying to get a rise out of them, whether they use an alias or not, is just plain wrong.

The truth is that there aren't really that many people here that fit the bill of a troll.  It's a select few.  As a 54-year old I understand that in any large enough group of people, there will always be a couple of fools.  I just don't like suffering them without an occasional and agitated airing of my thoughts about it.  - Rant over - Thank you.

BTW, I fully expect an 'It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia' .gif ;)

We try to limit the trolls here at the Hangout and if we see someones doing so we warn them and then remove them if they don't stop.

In my experiences here at the OH, the trolls whom are constantly at odds with half of the board are almost always limited posting members ........ so ironically enough, they don't pay the proverbial troll toll
