SMU: Best Record Since the "Pony Express" Days

The 1989 SMU Football team consisted of 73 Freshman, with Mitchell Gleiber and Norbert Osborn being the only 2 players who remained with the school from the 1986 team, and Michael Bowen returning after having transferred to Georgia ........ that was because it was their first year of football since they suffered the "Death Penalty", which canceled 2 entire seasons of the school's team (1987 and 1988.)

 

Now the Mustangs are 8-0, their best start to a football season since the days of the "Pony Express" (1980-1984.) Granted that SMU's current conference (American Athletic Conference) is not as formidable as was the Southwest Conference back in those days, but the team is still undefeated and ranked in the Top-25 for the first time since October of 1986 ........ just prior to the previously-mentioned "Death Penalty."
