Rule 5: Michael Rucker - RHP - Cubs

I like that statement. It’s probably 50/50 that we trade Givens. Fry might be useless if they pass implement the new rule. Right now the only pitchers that we can pencil in are,

Means, Cobb, Wojo

Givens, Harvey, Bleier, Castro, Armstrong

That’s 5 spots up for grabs and I think we’re going to lean towards pitchers that can go multiple innings. I mean, we’re going to have to with that rotation.

I think we bring in 2-3 vet SP on milb/mlb min deals. We shouldn’t do anything to mess up the prospects development in AAA until they are ready. That includes Akin.

I personally hope Carroll is healthy and shows well in ST. I thought he was a promising bullpen arm in that trade and I don't think we've seen him at his best in what little we have seen of him. He'd be my pick for someone that surprises after some time with Chris Holt.

Speaking of Armstrong, I was looking at his pitch characteristics and this is what I came up with. Read all the way through the thread and Armstrong himself weighs in on my comments.

That's awesome! Must be validating to hear that.

Welp now you gotta break the news to him that he's trying to do too much.  Worry about just improving the CB.  haha

Yeah, a 29-year old RP with some interesting power stuff perhaps a curve tweak away from a more competitive 2-pitch repertoire then going onto the CH as Point #2 just makes me think of Marsellus Wallace on Butch's CHampionship hopes - "if you was going to make it, you woulda made it by now".

Well my first look of Rucker this spring and I came away impressed with his fastball/slider combination. I thought he was a longshot to stick on the roster but if he can command those two pitches he's got a chance to stick in the pen.

+1, he had the one performance that jumped out at me. Live FB, weird arm angle, good command, got some swings and misses reaching for the SL and catching up to the FB. I think he faced all B-team guys though.

He needs to stick and use Wu Tang as his entry music

Bring the mother-rucking Ruckus?

He seemed to do well yesterday, if he does stick, who do you think would be the odd man out to make room for him?

Not sure yet. I'd like to see a few weeks in before making any calls.

I don't think it's one specific guy. Hess, Milone, Shepherd, Bailey, Armstrong, Stewart, Fry, and Scott are all fighting for spots, bullpen and rotation. He could even bump Smith Jr to go with an extra pitcher.

Against the rules.

    • I think the cost of replacing that production through FA would far outweigh the prospects received in a trade. I also don't see that fitting Elias' profile under Angelos. Maybe if we're sold.
    • Santander is a valuable piece. Guys who are worth 1.5 WAR for all-round good play are not falling out of trees, yet you seem to think they are as common as bad rumors.  I’m happy to trade him, if that’s what Elias wants, but no way will we easily replace his production with out in-house guys
    • Or two years with an option . I have to preface this with saying I don’t know a whole lot about Andrelton Simmons other than he plays gold glove hall of fame caliber defense and I know we have some middle infielders coming up but this is why I do it  - those that are playing SS right now in the system are at least a couple of years away.    - there is no guarantee that those prospects that could play shortstop in mlb will be able to in mlb - Henderson , west burg and Vavra are all bigger guys and could necessitate a move to another position  - we have a lot of pitchers coming up- young pitchers that will need a solid defense up the middle - what better way to shore that up with a gold glove winner at 2nd (Sanchez ) and short .    - as much as the shift in instituted now we need someone athletic enough to be able to adapt and cover ground there - not a Ruiz , not an Alberto, not a Villar .someone that’s sound . - for our pitchers and the defense  if it’s between us and another team I say we bite the bullet for the reasons above and spend on this one . There is another really good class of shortstop free agents next year and we won’t likely spend on those because those will likely be  more expensive . I think you go in this year even though we are rebuilding - but I think this helps out the rebuild .  Otherwise just sign Villar and be done with it . NO to GALVIS
    • Yep. If our GM decides to hamstring the team's competitiveness in 2022 the team will be less competitive in 2022. I'll agree with you on that one. I won't agree that trading one or both makes being less competitive inevitable.
    • No, lazy is thinking you can’t replace around 5ish WAR.  That’s what you are saying and doing.  What I’m saying is the exact opposite of lazy.  It’s making several different moves to set yourself up now and for the long term.  Standing pat is lazy. Not only do I think they can do this, this is the scenario I expect to happen.
    • That's immaterial. What I'm saying is that if we trade Santander and Mancini, we're not replacing them for 2022, which means we're less likely to be competitive in 2022. It's arguable whether we should do this, but the effect would be a less competitive team in 2022.
    • Nope, because Elias has shown a strong tendency toward slow rolling promotions and prioritizing gaming service time. Would you agree that if a bat first college player is selected high in the first round he should not need much time in the minors?
