Best romantic comedies

Recommended Posts

Yes, I’m secure enough in my manhood to start this thread!    From a random derailment of a thread on the main board:

=====

I love a good Rom-Com.     Depending how you want to define them, here are some of my favorites:

When Harry Met Sally

Sleepless in Seattle

It Happened One Night

Adam’s Rib

Silver Linings Playbook

Enough Said

The Big Sick

The Philadelphia Story

Bringing Up Baby

Moonstruck

As you can see, I like mixing in the real oldies.

What do you admit to liking?

Hugh Grant had a nice run, I liked both Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill.  The French film known in the states as Blind Date was hilarious.

I'll add a few, but first I just have to say that Sleepless in Seattle just doesn't work for me.  The whole point of a romantic comedy is that we can see the two people are perfect for each other and they just don't realize it yet.  Having two people who have never met until the end just doesn't work for me.

Anyhow, I'll add a few;

   Groundhog Day

   Annie Hall

   As Good As It Gets

   The Wedding Singer

   And one from the 70s:  Same Time Next Year

I didn’t care for Sleepless in Seattle either.

While I love Annie Hall I wouldn’t consider it a romantic comedy as the main characters are not together at the end.

Romantic comedy follows a pattern.  Couple meets, couple breaks up, couple gets back together.

I love Woody Allen’s movies but I see them as an entirely different category, called “Woody Allen movies.”

Woody Allen doesn’t really work in a romantic comedy as he isn’t the kind of guy women find attractive.
