Anyone think Elias punishment incoming?

Elias was an amateur scouting director. For him to have had any role in this would be a large stretch of the imagination.

His role was bigger than that.    But he had no role involving the major league team.    Worst case, he heard about what was happening and didn’t do anything about it. Even if that’s the case (and we don’t know that it is), he wasn’t in the chain of command for that part of the operation and there’s no way he’s getting punished for that.

What was he going to do, tell Hinch and Luhnow? They already knew. And, as you say, it wasn't his place to step in.

Theoretically he could have gone to the commissioner.  Realistically he could get out of dodge when another job presented itself.

I don't see any punishment possible for Elias, not sure how much he even knew.

I think MLB is done with the Astros end of things, and now will focus on the Red Sox penalties and how long Cora will be banned.

Why would I be afraid?  How about more likely the Astros way is a fraud.  Cheating to know the pitch help their batters and foreign substances on the ball to improve their pitching.  That is what you should be afraid of.

You'd love that, wouldn't you?  I think you're rather have the entire rebuild crash and burn than see Elias be successful.

Your dream is for Elias to be caught up in this scandal, get fired, and have him be replaced with a Jim Beattie/Andy MacPhail clone whose immediate priority will be to sign half a dozen 30-year-old stopgaps for $6M each to push the O's to 73 wins this year.

100% chance he knew. From the fangraphs article the the other day, it’s sounds like he was more involved with the minors. I don’t think he was an active participant.

If Luhnow had to know because he walked but the display in the tunnel every day then Elias also had to know.  Especially since Hinch took a bat to the display on a couple of occasions.  That made it something that most employees around the club probably knew about.   But the persons that have been punished are those that were directly involved and responsible for the cheating.    It was not in Elias area of responsibility.

Elias' punishment will be to watch the O's this season.

M.E. will not receive any punishment even if proof is found. They have sympathy for him. He gets to work with the Angelos family and has to try and figure out how to make the Orioles better while working with them. Sorry but he has been punished enough.

It is ridiculousness to think that Elias would cause the rebuild to crash and burn.  I did not like Andy Macphail.  I am not sure why you thin I want the Orioles to be successful.  I think the Astros got successful and tanking IMHO is cheating.

How about the woman who used to be Dodgers assistant GM and now is VP with MLB she seems like she would be a great replacement for Elias.

Not sure why Elias would be implicated. I don't see cameraman listed in his former job description. That said, it would not be surprising but any link to Elias would be pure speculation.

Not to mention that no one else in the Astro's front office is implicated.

I think you want the Orioles to be successful with your model, but not the current plan.  You hope the current plan fails because you think it's cheating or immoral or lying or something.

You are just saying trust the plan when Elias hasn't done anything to show me he has any sort of plan other than losing on purpose.

You say I should not judge him on his performance as you were for hiring him and you don't want to be wrong. If you want to be that the Orioles have a winning record this season I will gladly take your action. Same thing with next season.

Elias is the architect of the rebuild, which as you well know, is far from complete. He has put many things into place (spent valuable time and money), and If he were to leave before it is finished, there is a chance that whomever succeeded him would have different priorities (for better or worse) thus setting the timeline back for the rebuild. I don’t doubt that someone else could do the job, but I worry that it would set back the timeline.

Also, in all seriousness, please explain how tanking is cheating.

I don't get why everyone gets so hot and heavy about the only alternative to the Elias-Tank-Rebuild is that they sign a bushel of washed up dudes for a bunch of money.

Sure, the Derek Lee / Jay Payton / Kevin Millar signings were dumb. But, their worst attendance was 1.7M in 2010 and they had a payroll $81M. Last year they had a payroll of $82M and had an attendance of 1.3M.

You gotta figure they were making more money with those dumb old dudes than they are now with a bunch of random parts.
