Sad about baseball this year.

Recommended Posts

I’m so sad about baseball this year. I’m not enthusiastic. All this cheating scandal is really upsetting me. People cheat, it’s human: it’s not good, but it’s human. But the reaction to the widespread, long term, well planned and executed cheating is nothing. No repercussions for the players, no regret from the teams. On the contrary, both teams involved made insulting and defiant non-apology statements.

It really ruins my desire to follow the game any more.

Ive got the Bosox feed on right now and I don’t care.

Manfred has destroyed my summer dreams. It’s ok to cheat.

Its sad...I want to care. I want my summer back. But after a while the anger subsides and is replaced with apathy.

It's definitely a bad message to send. To not at least pull a bunch of players into fact finding inquiries is almost laughable. They needed to make the process enough of a pain in the rear that it would make other teams think twice about it.

The BoSox radio guys have been okay to listen to, talking about it. It will be interesting to see how the Astros are treated on the field by both the fans and the opposing teams. It will be very interesting, and practically unprecedented.

Sports are entertainment.  I kind of look at professional sports as a couple steps above the WWE.  The WWE, of course, is not real.  Professional sports are real to a certain extent but when you've got guys adding muscle in their 30s, increasing their hat sizes and shoe sizes to hit 70 homers, linebackers that can run a 4.5 40 at 265 pounds, referees that are fixing NBA games, guys banging on trashcans in an elaborate sign stealing scheme... I mean, c'mon.

Have they mentioned the Red Sox cheating?

I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything in the rule book about electronic sign stealing prior to the September 2017 memo, which Manfred used to address the Red Sox using Apple Watches.

To my knowledge the Red Sox stopped stealing signs electronically (read: had not been caught doing so) after that memo, but the Astros obviously were doing it well into the playoffs.

Now I could be wrong with my timelines, but the Red Sox were only stealing signs within the confines of established rules, which is a "morally gray" area of cheating, but decidedly different than what the Astros were caught doing after being warned to stop.

I thought the Red Sox alleged cheating occurred in 2018.  Cora wasn't their manager in 2017, he was with the Astros.

Looks like you are correct. I stand corrected.

The Red Sox are two-time cheaters.   First with their Apple watches, which is what caused Manfred to issue his September 2017 memo.   Then in 2018 under Cora.    I could argue they deserve a worse punishment since they cheated two different times.    We’ll see what Manfred does.

Three when you include their international market violation.

The electronic sign-stealing scandal doesn’t detract from my hunger for baseball at all.   I just hope similar stuff doesn’t continue to happen.     But I won’t think about it at all as I watch the games, except when the announcers bring it up.

Also helps knowing the Orioles weren't robbed of anything either. It's not like they win the World Series in 2017 if the Astros aren't cheating.

As long as no other teams are going to cheat like this in 2020 and beyond, I won't pay it much mind. I'm more interested in seeing some of the prospects start to make an impact.

No. They used the replay room and runners. After the death threat.

Have any teams thought of maybe using a prudent strategy of changing from their 19th century communication technique of fingers in between thighs and hand signals and....oh I don’t know, maybe using a technology to communicate more securely?
