The number of cases will likely explode as testing is expanded, plus, there will be new cases. Given how slow we have been to test, it could be 6-8 weeks before we have anything approaching a realistic picture of what's going on. Right now, with only the worst cases being tested, no one knows how bad it is.

In Vo, Italy they tested everyone, isolated all who tested positive, and then tested them again two weeks later. When they did the retests they found six people who were still positive and yet never had any symptoms. By isolating all the carriers they quickly ended the epidemic in their town. But, as we so often say in baseball, it was a SSS - small town.

As has been cited in many places, the first US and first S. Korea cases were on the same day.  Since then S. Korea has tested 10 times the number as tested in the US, and looks to be on the curve back down.

Also despite the low number of tests being administered does anyone find it odd that there a daily story from a celebrity (today Sean Payton) where they say they had symptoms yesterday and were tested today and found to be positive.

For those who are interested:

Hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil) has been used for the treatment of malaria for almost 70 years.  It is also used for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and it is also very effective for polymyalgia rheumatica in some patients.  It is safe and cheap and in the brief amount of time I spent looking online very promising for treating corona viruses.  It's also early, of course, but it qualifies as good news in an otherwise bleak outlook.

He wasn’t even coughing or had a fever he said.  Just felt weak,

I took plaquenil for eight years for rheumatoid arthritis and experienced no side effects. But the dosage as a coronavirus treatment could be radically different from what I took. Plaquenil users must have their eyes tested before usage and during sustained usage as it can cause a type of retinopathy. After eight years my retina specialist suggested that I stop using plaquenil or risk going blind. Too bad, because it was the best RA treatment I've taken.

Yeah, I take it for PMR and it's a miracle drug as far as I'm concerned.  What I read suggests that five times my daily dosage is what they're looking at as a potential treatment for COVID-19.  Twice that is where the threshold for toxicity begins, so this would have to be a short-term deal.

My eye doctor told me ten years would be about as long as I could hope to use it, so your experience sounds about right.

Thankfully, this med wont be needed long term, just short term to get well quickly. Almost like TAMAFLU for the flu.

Also have to see if it works well in all cases. Most of the tests have been done in test tubes and not on people yet. Plus the dose level will have to be watched. Don't want to do more harm then good which happened with the swine flu vaccine in 1976 people got   the paralyzing Guillain-Barré syndrome.Plus Mylan in West Virginia is ramping up production but won't have enough till mid April and then has to be distributed. Think they can have enough for 1.5 million people or so by then. Hopefully by then they will have a better idea if it works in people.

I believe Australia is already using it in a pilot study on humans.

The president was just on, they have already ramped up the orders, and there are a couple of different companies able to produce this drug quickly and effectively

We shall see. Hopefully it works but trial studies could take a few months. But quicker then a vaccine. Like all the other data points out there ,this is just another one TBD, A new virus could be many different things.

I would be astonished, completely astonished if there is a season this year.

Frankly, I think teams are going to really struggle to stay afloat.   No revenue coming in and they are on the line for an incredible amount of owed money to players, staff, and other obligations.

When I was taking Plaquenil the primary manufacturing source for it was in India. One year that factory flunked its FDA test, so there was a shortage and the price (on my insurance) went from $12/mo. to $75.

My point is that any drugs that work will need to be sourced in the US so there is a stable supply.

I think cable TV money pays the bills.

Now, do they have to return money for no games, good question.

I see no season this summer.
