O's have a name on BA's 2020 J-2 Int'l Prospects List

Recommended Posts

#31Samuel Basallo
Samuel Basallo
Dominican Republic
C

Notes:

Born: Aug. 13, 2004. B-T: L-R. Ht.: 6-3. Wt: 198.
Report: Basallo is one of the youngest players in the class—he will be eligible to sign once he turns 16 on Aug. 13—and was once connected to the Yankees, but he's now expected to sign with the Orioles for a bonus near $1.5 million. Basallo is a tall, physical catcher with a plus arm, above-average raw power and a sound swing from the left side. Already 6-foot-3 at 15, Basallo might outgrow catcher if he keeps getting bigger, but right now he's lean and agile with good flexibility behind the plate for his size. Basallo trains with Ivan Noboa.

Basallo is less than three years older than my oldest kid, who is in the 7th grade, weighs 63 pounds, and resembles a major leaguer like I resemble Andre the Giant.

Basallo upstages AR, makes him play first base or makes him expendable.

You heard it here first.

He's 15.  Even if he takes the Manny route to the majors he won't be in Baltimore until '25.  By then the fanbase will have long since soured on Rutschman since he's not Bench-with-speed or Piazza-with-defense.

Also absolutely love that he was connected to the Yankees and now he's expected to sign with us.

That makes up for 19-and-aught-02, it does.

I have said this before,  but Mike bringing in Koby Perez will be 5 years from now seen as his absolute best move.   I am a huge fan and expect we will see many, many things international front wise that we have never seen done by our organization ever before.

Boy, we have waited so long to get to this point.  It doesn't seem real on one hand.

On the other hand, there is little doubt that we have the combination of connected, high level executives and the ownership commitment to spend internationally to make our international spending an organizational strength in an area where the Os have been perhaps baseball's biggest laggard.  We may have been close to this point before with commitment and intent, but it feels more genuine and likely today.

Getting our share of international prospects at the top, middle and bottom of the market would be a major boost to the long term competitiveness of the Orioles.  Very exciting!

Have we ever signed a young Latin prospect for more than $500 k?    $1.5 mm would be quite a leap.    They must be very high on the kid.    Still, I wouldn’t want to make my living guessing which 15-year olds will be successful major league players.

And no, Henry Urrutia and Daniel Alvarez don’t count as young Latin prospects.

What do you think, 8 years before we need to return to this comment?
