The list looks much smaller this year.  What's up with that?  😉

I'll let you handle the 20k  FA signing thread to follow!

Our competitive balance pick this year is HUGE and comes with the following advantages:

 - 30th overall - it is a very high pick - end of first round if the Astros still had their pick

 - It means we are the first team with a second pick - giving us the ability to take a high quality player in the first round and then perhaps step into the riskier part of the pool with our competitive balance pick.

 - the pick obviously has the highest bonus slot of any pick outside the first round

 - the pick also pairs well with our second round pick at 39.

Yes, in a shortened draft, this extra pick carries extra benefits.  There should be less gaming for the Os considering we can get the second overall pick and then have two other high picks really before other teams start their gaming efforts if they plan to have a senior signs to grab extra high quality guys.

Remember the names Bryce Jarvis and Bobby Miller for picks 30 and 39. Both pitchers! Keith Law says his sources inside the Orioles say they are not taking a pitcher with the 2nd pick. I still think Detroit will take Martin and we will hit the jackpot landing Spencer Torkelson with the 2nd pick. He hits the long ball to left and right field. He will excel at Oriole Park.

This is what has me intrigued as we get closer to draft day. A lot of scouts apparently believe Martin is the better all around player, and yet most pundits assume Torkelson is a certainty to be drafted by the a Tigers at #1. What if they choose Martin instead? Do the Orioles then go with Lacy or even Gonzales? Or do we take the Tork and hope he turns into Paul Konerko?

Jim Callis sent out a survey that he reported on about a month ago and Torkelson was preferred by about 60% of respondents, Martin about 30% and Lacy 10%.  I really prefer Martin over Tork because I prefer an elite on-base tablesetter to the plus-plus power - in this particular case and given our roster.  I don't think anyone should have a problem if we have Adley and Tork at 3/4 in our lineup for a decade though.  It is a no-lose situation getting the second prize of Tork/Martin.

So, if I understand it correctly, we can exceed slot by 5%, or a little under $700K, without penalty.  If so, looks like we need to come in about $1.5 million total under slot between Kjerstad, Westburg, Haskin, and Servideo to avoid penalty, based on the numbers reported for Mayo and Baumler.

Mayo signed for #42-43 overall slot money.

Baumler signed for #49-50 overall slot money.

So they both got 2nd round money.

So much for the worry that we aren't going to spend our entire draft allotment.

I always thought that was delusional paranoia (sorry, CoC).
