Where do Kjerstad/Westburg fit on the 2023/24 team

Yes .... they gave up a legitimate shot at a first round hit for a long shot that lasted only three seasons.

As I mentioned before with much criticism. The approach is idiotic!

Even a broken clock is right twice a day but it seems like time is standing still for you.

Just because it failed in this one instance doesn't mean the approach won't work in other situations.  Astros had good luck with it.

It isn't something I would do much, if at all, but it can work.

Not to mention that there’s plenty of examples of the first overall “BPA” pick not working out for the drafting team

My guy from that draft is at 2.8 rWAR.

Go out and look at % of players by round that become all stars at the MLB level. That number decreases by round and drops off the table. Going with a long shot in round 1 in order to draft a guy in the later rounds where the success rate is much smaller doesn’t make sense. I’m not saying it doesn’t work. Just that the percentages are low.

Try actually adding something to the conversation beyond your silly insults.

Offer any factual data that might prove otherwise.....those things are better than just being a butt-hole

Who Coffey? He never made it and hasn’t played since 2012.

Kjerstad wasn't a long shot. Martin was thought to be the top guy following the 2019 draft. His stock stayed flat. Kjerstad's stock improved over the course of last summer and in the beginning of the college season. Who knows who the consensus guy would have been had the college season played out.

The player I would have picked instead of Hobgood.

Kjerstad made is way up to the 10th ranked player on most of the scouting boards. Show me just one that had him ranked 2nd. He was definitely a reach at #2

Who ....

Sorry, wrong year, I don't recall who I wanted in 2008.  I might not have had a real preference.

He was 7th on fangraphs, in the same 50 fv tier as everyone in the top 7 but Torkelson.

Hobgood was the 2009 draft. The Sun had the Orioles rumored to be deciding between Wheeler and Ackley. Had they taken Wheeler who they gifted to the Giants he and his 3-77 would be a rotation anchor. If the chose Ackley hw would’ve given them 7.7 war of MLB production. Instead they went cheap and we all know the outcome.

7th isn’t 2nd! That’s my point so I appreciate your assistance. There were at least 6 better rated prospects including Martin. The only one they couldn’t get is Torkelson

I really don't care about what the scouting boards say. They are made in an echo chamber and with attachment to the ranking that was used in the previous ranking release (similar to college football and basketball rankings). They are not non-biased evaluations of the current performance and future projection.

    • I don’t think we saw enough of Valaika defensively at 2B (73 innings total) to draw any conclusions about whether he’s better than Alberto.    I tend to doubt he is, but I don’t really have a strong view about it.     I thought Valaika did a nice job with the bat, and in particular, showed more power than I would have expected.   I’m not sold that he’s a .791 hitter, but he showed enough to hold his 40-man spot this winter.
    • my takeaway from 2020 is Mountcastle, Hays, Akin, Kremer, and to lesser extent Mullins.   Santander and Iglesias did good things.  Means finished strong.  Hope.
    • Joe West and Angel Hernandez asked me to say hello for them.
    • Thanks for sharing that.  Don’t believe I’ve heard Martyn before.  Now, I’d like to hear the Foo Fighters cover it.
    • The great increases in homers and strikeouts have occurred in the last few years. I think it may be because the players are practicing putting backspin on the balls when they hit them. The backspin will make the balls travel farther, but it's also harder to put backspin on a baseball by hitting it. If you watch Sports Center when they are showing highlights of homeruns, they usually show in slow motion some of the batters' swings. If you see this from the camera angle that is near the dugout facing the batter, you can see that the batters are swinging using a downward angle. The downward angle will put backspin on the ball(if it is hit just right). It's also harder to hit the ball when your swing has that angle. So if the batters hit the pitches just right, the balls will have backspin and if those balls are in the air they will have more of a chance of going over the fence. But it is also harder to make contact with the pitch, which makes an increase in strikeouts inevitable.  Analytics have made the old idea of the level swing just something in the memories of us old-timers.
    • I like games when balls are put in play.  Mountcastle puts balls in play.  I like Ryan Mountcastle. 😉
    • DJ LeMahieu is a free agent at the end of the year
