2020 Round 3 (74): Anthony Servideo - SS - (Junior)(Mississippi)

Recommended Posts

Secret pick?  I checked CBS and cannot find who we got.   I have to go cook dinner, getting dirty looks.   But want to know who it is.  Some super overslot winner to save the draft?   😎

Another defensive SS whose bat has some questions.  Wonderful.

But what's his exit velo?

The ESPN broadcast made it sound like he wouldn’t stick at short.  More likely a 2B or utility guy who can play a little OF.

Just before 74, MLB Network gave a view of the Orioles zoom draft room - it was a 5 x 5 square.  Imagine Luke was somewhere in that very Brady visual.

Fellow SEC SS/erstwhile Hjerstad teammate Casey Martin just scrolled by near the top of MLB's best available feed, where he's been second banana to Wilcox for awhile.

Servideo was in the midst of a breakout season, slashing .415/.579/1.334. His on-base percentage was 11th in all of college baseball. He led the SEC in stolen bases (9). More importantly, he was showcasing his defensive ability in his first season as the Rebels’ starting shortstop, as well as his newfound power potential. Servideo was tied for second on the team in home runs (5). He hit four combined in his previous two seasons.

Quote

A junior from Jupiter, Florida, Servideo enjoyed one of the hottest starts to the 2020 college baseball season of any player in America. Stepping in at Ole Miss for 2019 second-round pick Grae Kessinger, Servideo proved to be one of the most productive offensive shortstops in the country while contributing professional-caliber defense and showcasing top-flight base-running skills.

Experts view Servideo as a player who could be picked as early as the late third round in this week's five-round MLB Draft. Some nagging questions remain about whether his offensive production is sustainable, but Servideo's other skills make him an interesting and multi-talented prospect.

...

Through 17 games in 2020, Servideo batted .390 with a .575 on-base percentage and a .695 slugging percentage. Batting in the leadoff spot, Servideo scored 24 runs and drove in 17. He logged three doubles, five home runs and 24 walks, the second-most walks of any college baseball player in 2020 behind projected top-five pick Spencer Torkelson

Servideo also stole nine bases on 10 tries and turned more double plays than he made errors in his first season as a college shortstop.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper named Servideo a second-team All-America performer for 2020 and named him the national player of the week in the second week of the season after he hit .500 with six runs, seven RBIs and three home runs in four games.

"Premium defensive shortstop, played out of position the last two seasons."

So their draft strategy is to go for guys who got off to a hot start in 2019.

With good exit velocities.  (this eliminates pitchers)
