Orioles make an offer to Yasiel Puig. UPDATE: Puig to sign with Braves Tests POSITIVE for COVID 19

Recommended Posts

The longer this goes on, the less of a chance we've got to land him.  Allowing more time to pass allows other teams, better teams to come in and make an offer better than ours.

Oh well, it'd be cool if we landed him but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Manny was a great player. Great.

Is.

Remember that conversation in another thread where Corn said a four or five win bar for Mountcastle was setting him up for failure on purpose?  Manny just turned 28, missed half a year with injury and 2/3rds of another because of COVID, and has had four 5-win seasons, two of those over seven.

My main concern about signing Puig is strategic.    What do we really gain by signing him?     He certainly would be an above average player compared to the overall talent on the team — if things go well, maybe he fills the hole created by Mancini’s absence.    But I’m more inclined to see what some of our younger players can do, even though it’s unlikely they’d match Puig’s production.

Some entertainment.  This team is going to suck.  I'd at least like them to be somewhat entertaining in doing so.

Who is our opening day outfield if we don't sigh Puig, and we are without Santander, Smith Jr, and Mancini?

LF: Stewart

CF: McKenna

RF: Hays

4thOF: Mason Williams? Cedric Mullins?

Where in the world are you getting McKenna from?   He not on the 60 man pool and isn't in Summer Camp 2.0.

LF -- Stewart

CF -- Hays

RF -- Williams

4th OF -- Mullins.  Wilkerson and Velazquez have played a lot of outfield in Camp 2.0.

But I have a feeling that we will be seeing Santander and Smith any day now.

I'd rather Diaz skip a level than McKenna, but I doubt either will (I realize Diaz isn't on the 40). I'd say Hays, Stewart, Wilkerson (blah) with Willams 4th. Or flip Williams and Wilkerson.

Yeah...defintely not McKenna. It'll be Stewart, Hays and Williams. I think Mountcastle then becomes the everyday option in Williams' place in about a week when Williams then slides into the fourth OF role.

I am not counting out Santander and Smith just yet but if they are not available:

For the first 7 days I think it Hays, Stewart and (Wilkerson, Valiaka, Velazquez)

After that Mountcastle and Williams are promoted.   Wilkerson  is optioned and Wynns is DFA'd and then re-signed.  Just a guess.

This is where I'm at.  I'd rather see Mountcastle in LF and Diaz in RF (although I know that's not happening) with Hays in CF and Santander moving around and getting time at DH than any outfield with rental players like Puig that won't be here long-term anyway.  Sixty days of development in real baseball games isn't a full season, but it's better than sitting on the couch at home for our near ML ready prospects.

Come to think of it - with Markakis taking himself out, and the NL using the DH this year, Puig would probably make a lot more sense for a team like the Braves.  Then they don't have to play a poor fielder like Ozuna or DuVall in RF.  And they don't have to rush 21 year olds Pache and Waters.

1) The team is a little more entertaining

2) he’s instantly your best offensive player

3) Perhaps he can be traded for a prospect or two

4) The money fits in the budget

FWIW, Puig to Braves? Makes sense with Markakis out.

Someone also said they saw him in a restaurant in Atlanta.  Why can't we ever have nice things?

I don’t expect Puig to play up to his best years with the Dodgers, but with a chance to hit in the middle of a lineup at a hitter’s park he can certainly rebound.  And at just 29 years old, he still has a lot left in the tank.  Puig would also bring an excitement factor to the field which the Orioles haven’t really showcased since they traded Manny Machado (Mancini might be the mildest star in the league).

A deal with the Orioles would also make sense from Puig’s standpoint.  He has been a free agent since last season ended, meaning he has been sitting at home for nine months not knowing if he will get another chance in the MLB.  Hitting third for Baltimore will allow him to prove himself to the league again and he will be able to sign a more deserving contract in the future.

We have not heard what the offer is to Puig, but I would guess it is a two year deal in the $5-8 million range.  Puig made $9.7 million last year, so a low-budget team like the Orioles can scoop him up for a bargain.  Some might expect a one year deal, but manager Brandon Hyde said it would be unlikely for Puig to be ready by opening day.

The purpose of signing Puig is not just to fill a hole, but the Orioles will try to trade him for prospects.  If Puig can only play 25 games before the deadline and around the same amount after, the Orioles won’t get much for him.  With a second year, GM Mike Elias could trade him in the offseason or the middle of 2021 for a better return.
