Hyde suggests he might bat Iglesias 6th.

Another section of the same column has some quotes from O’Day about Britton.

Is O'Day taking a shot at Britton there?  Because that would be hilarious.

For Hyde to say that Iglesias should bat  sixth tells me one thing.   The O's batting order is so bad that a hitter with a career 315 OBP should hit sixth,  it just expressing that he has no one better.   Iglesias OBP was .318 in 2019 and .310 the season before.    In a good lineup he bats 9th and is on the field for his glove.

I expect no real change for his career average this coming season.  Not at 30 years old.

He's going to talk him up.

Sounds more like a comment of respect.   Calls Britton a freak of nature.

The line about not being able to reach the bottom of his pockets.

I have no idea what that means.

I've seen the T-rex line used about cheap people.  That they can't reach to pick up the check or get to the wallet in their pocket.

That sounded to me like just a tag for short arm bones helping a pitch ala Three Finger Brown.

He also says he has a license to take digs at Britton because they’re friends, so while it was probably a cheap shot at Britton, just locker room jabs between penmates.

Sure, I was just suggesting it might have been a bit of a dig.

That seems like a rather odd stat for you to cite to question why Iglesias should bat 6th.   OBP by batting order position in the AL in 2019):

5th: .321

6th: .321

7th: .307

8th: .306

9th: .287

Based on that, a .315 OBP in the 6th slot is below average, but not terrible.  .315 would have been 10th in the AL in the 6th spot last year, instead of .303 and 14th, which is where the Orioles were.

A much bigger question would be Iglesias’ low SLG for the 6th slot — .407 last year (.371 career) for Iglesias overall, compared to .432 in the 6th slot for the AL.   Iglesias’ SLG  would have been 11th in the AL in the 6th spot, ahead of the Orioles’ 12th (.401).

My point is that Iglesias is not known for his bat.  To project him as a 6 hole batter says that the guys that are 7-9 are not up to batting that high.  That would be Ruiz, Severino and whoever is the 3rd outfielder.   While Hyde may be right it doesn't sound very good.

Yeah but you got your "point" mixed up. Your original point was that Iglesias shouldn't bat sixth because his career OBA is .315. It's not a matter of his OBA. It's not a matter of Iglesias not being known for his bat. Nor is it a matter of "the O's batting order is so bad that a hitter with a career 315 OBP should hit sixth." (emphasis: mine). If his slugging was .475, Iglesias and his .315 OBA would be a perfectly reasonable 6th-hole hitter.

Meanwhile, Iglesias' .371 lifetime SP is higher than Ruiz's and Severino's.

I doubt Iglesias will hit sixth in many games.

    • Seems just like the old SG to take a few quotes and then start bashing our FO and ownership for "dumb" things. IMO, the most telling quote in the link was also the one ME explained.  The revenue situation is uncertain.  ME is quoted as saying, "We can't estimate our revenue, our attendance ....  We can't estimate various things that we look at when we look at a player or roster budget."  In light of such uncertainty, it is quite a leap to say the FO is dumb for not pursuing a particular player - in this case, Stroman.  Most prudent, well-run businesses would operate in such as manner given the uncertainty. There are multiple ways to save $ with Chris Davis including his negotiating a settlement for possible retirement, a shortened season, etc.  All of these things are more important today than opening up Davis' roster spot.  Let's see what happens.
    • Also, if we keep Cobb through the winter, we will need the spot for rule 5 protection.
    • It is a happy fact that I think the Orioles will be good enough next year that they won’t need him. They need good infield defense and he doesn’t provide that.
    • Some final defensive numbers: Rtot: +15 (6th in MLB) Rdrs: -3 (19th in MLB)  UZR: -5.4 (21st in MLB) Fangraphs defense: -4.4 (21st in MLB)  Fielding %: .980 (27th in MLB) Overall, a bit better than last year but below average unless you want to believe Rtot.

    • The first tiebreaker was division record, even though they played in different divisions.  I guess since all games were East vs East, Central vs Central, West vs West... Division record = league record. If that was tied then it was record in final 20 division (league) games. If that was tied then record in final 21 div games, the. 22, the n23, and so on. Kind of silly but those are the rules.
