No more argument to play Chris Davis

Recommended Posts

I know most people believe there has been no reason to play Chris Davis for a long time now.  However where the Orioles are today in this version of Covid-Baseball there is ZERO reason any longer.

It has been 20 games and Chris Davis is hitting .136 after 1/3 of the season with one RBI.

Pedro Severino is going to play most days.  His bat has earned that.  Chance Sisco's bat has earned him a long look in the lineup as well.  So he needs to play DH or 1B on the  days a week he isn't catching.  Nunez needs to play everyday.  He has more than earned that.  He has to play either DH or 1B.  Nunez hasn't been terrible at 1B.

This team is a playoff contender right now.  Your choice is to play Sisco or Chris Davis right now.  Is there really any choice at this point?  Also even though Austin Hayes hasn't lit it up hitting yet his absence from the lineup everyday makes the lineup weaker with either Mullins or Velaquez.  Pretty much one of them has to play because they are the only ones that can play CF.

There are some real alternatives to Davis now and the team is playing well. Whatever the talk of with Davis adding muscle last offseason, blah, blah blah. It's not working and Davis is never going to improves to even a below average slugger.

Sisco should be getting at bats nearly everyday even if he isn't going to catch every game.

I personally wanted one more terrible season for a high draft pick. The team is not cooperating, so now I reached the point today that I would like Davis cut, because his job of helping them lose is over and Mountcastle called up. I mean it is to the point that I could go out there(with full body armor of course) and get on base near the clip Davis is. I could just put my bat out like a bunt and try to adjust it as fast I could to make contact and adjust wether I deadened the ball or pushed it based on how close the infield was(I probably would have zero chance but I would like to think I could do better than Davis is doing)

I am a believer in your ability Seva. I do think you would do just as well as Davis at the plate. You'd get a freak hit and a freak rbi. That pretty much makes you tied. I don't see how we don't see Mountcastle at LF now that Hayes is out. Once Mountcastle is called up, I find it difficult to believe Davis would still be here. It's time to cut bait with that overweight lack of try.

There is zero chance of Davis getting cut unless having a 162 game season next year is a certainty.    COVID is terrible but the O’s saved about $14.5 mm this year compared to what they would have paid Davis if they had cut him prior to the season.   Turns out that what we all thought was a sunk cost wasn’t completely sunk after all.    I’d like to think we will be in a position to play a full season next year, but who knows?

Chris Davis' OPS is lower than Iglesias' batting average 😂

I mean that's kind of an unfair comparison don't you think?

You shouldn't be comparing a 1B/DH to a glove first guy, they bring different skillsets to the club.

Maybe Hyde will shake things up, bat him ninth.

Lol.  I noticed the other day he hit Sisco 7, Davis 8, and Hays nine.  When for many reasons, it would have made sense to bat him ninth for L/R reasons and because Hays is much better than him.  I think they are woried about hurting Davis's feelings batting him ninth.

There's an argument you could make that the eighth guy should actually be your worst hitter if you have another leadoff type hitter for the number nine spot.

Davis?  How would you feel if the manager batted you behind Davis?  I'd feel terrible about myself.

I've never cared for that argument but yes, I've seen pitchers hitting 8th.

    • Great.   They have done a good job of keeping up on things.
    • Is it showing real signs of age and does it need significant repairs? It still looks good on TV, but so doesn’t Fenway and I’ve heard stories about that place.    I ask because even though Camden isn’t ancient, it’s not new anymore.
    • Man this thread has turned into something. I won't bother quoting everyone but wanted to share a few reactions I had while reading. 1. Matt Boyd 2018-2019 is not a worthy comparison of John Means because John Means is a much better pitcher. Any trade discussion should start from the fact that we would be trading a 28 year old cheap, controllably pitcher who is approaching 350 innings now at nearly LESS than 1.00 WHIP, ERA less than 3.60. And yes the Bedard haul is a reasonable comparison. To hell with the peripherals that don't like him. Watch him pitch. FIP says that John Means and Matt Harvey have been the same pitcher this year. He has excellent control/command with a knack for avoiding hard contact. Why is a .230 BABIP concerning when his career BABIP is .244? So any trade should be valuing him at the nearly top of the rotation talent he has been, and the not the back of the rotation the advanced metrics say he is. If not? Sorry. 2. Let's put to rest any discussion Austin Hays is a platoon player. He's our 2nd best position player. There's no concerning career splits and any O's fan should want him in the outfield everyday.  3. Ryan McKenna has played his role well for a rookie and I've become more fond of him as the season went along. Short sample size but his 11 homers and 7 steals in 27 games at Norfolk were eye opening. He's in excellent shape, hustles, is a fantastic defender, has displayed a good batting eye, and it's way too early to give up on his bat.  4. Regarding Trey Mancini and Anthony Santander's trade value, I'm not sure there is much. We are looking at a 0.9 and 0.3 B-Ref WAR players. Decent bats who have seen better days and don't provide much else. Renato Nunez provided 2.6 WAR and a 107 OPS+ in less than 2 normal seasons and was DFA'd in his first arbitration year. I want both Mancini and Santander back but let's not kid ourselves that we would be getting back a high quality package for these players.  5. I think people tend to gloss over how beneficial it is to have real major league pitchers in the majors while our prospects are developing. I'm all for tanking and not spending everything we have for a 70 win team, but without pitchers like John Means, games turn into exhaustive bullpen games, pitchers get overworked, and your prospects get yanked around or rushed. So Yeah I don't think John Means is not leading us to contention in 2022 but he is still a valuable part of the rebuild. He is not wasted value/talent whatsoever.  6. The "terrible in 2022, .500 team in 2023, and contender in 2024" timelines are pretty ridiculous. Nobody knows when it will all come together. But I do believe success breeds success, and things tend to work out or not work out in clusters. And outside additions will come. We do not have to and will not home grow this entire team.
    • If I could have placed a bet during the few seconds I saw Means try to advance, I would have been willing to place a considerable sum on his getting hurt while sliding (or not sliding) into third. So I wasn't too distressed about him getting thrown out when he walked away unharmed.  When's the last time an Oriole pitcher was on base twice during a game? I find those on-base moments scary.
    • You might as well just says he's not available then. No one is going to give up that type of payment for a guy who has never pitched a full season, due to repeated arm fatigue, and has his peripherals. Yes, he's obviously underestimated by FIP and xFIP because they don't take into consideration quality of contact much in the way Kyle Hendricks is, but you're also talking about a guy who has posted a 4.26 ERA, 7.32 K/9 since the spider tack crack down on June 15th. There's too much uncertainty floating around him to warrant that kind of package. If  Robert Hassell and a back end of the Padre top 20 was available, I think that would be a really good haul considering those uncertainties.
    • I'm gonna guess that this hornet's nest will have some who will - "He's a #5 pick"!  "We coulda had "X" at 5!"  "Elias was just being cheap!" .  I'm not upset, however.
