Draft Order 2021

I don't see why draft picks being tradeable would be something that would be relevant to the labor negotiation.  What does that have to do with the Player's union?

It would still have to be collectively bargained and part of the CBA as a whole.

Serious question, why?

It has nothing to do with the Player's union.  That is the sort of change that MLB should be able to unilaterally make.

Let me go back to what I said...I’m assuming that it has to be collectively bargained because well, everything is.

To answer to “why?” is simply what I just said...because everything is.  Does that mean it’s a good answer?  No but it doesn’t need to be.  I do think that since players will be involved, indirectly, in this decision that the union has to be ok with it.

Gotcha.

I disagree that the Union would need to be involved.  This to me sounds like something that is an owners only issue.

I could see them adding it to a CBA since it would be a convenient time to add it but that doesn't mean it would be subject to the collect bargaining process.

I think the bottom line is we don’t know if the players get a say or not about this under the CBA.

I do not know what Elias attitude is between raw HS vs. polished  College, but for a franchise which needs to win it all very soon, I hope it is polished college.  For franchises which are contending to win it all every year, or which have won a WS recently, maybe they go the HS route.  I trust he has a schedule of short term/long term improvement etc., from his  boss,  so that should influence his decision.

Gunnar Hoglund is a magnificent name if we must drop to the SEC's #3 pitcher (how did Arkansas not get him?), and go for the Gunnar Monopoly.

There was nary another college arm for quite a while after him.  But this exercise today is like guessing your 2022 fantasy 1st round if the 2020 season were completely cancelled.  That said, it was my first look at the Pirates/Kumar juxtaposition, and they were the Million Dollar Arm organization.

This is our Rendon pick to finish the draft parallel to the Nats 3-year trough.  The pre-Stras/Harper/Rendon Nats had both Zimmerman(n)s to the Orioles Mountcastle/Grayson, etc.   By 2012 the Nationals draft pick was down to 16th, and Giolito became trade bait for that core.   I do think if the 2021 Orioles generally use their best players they'd pick more like 10th than 5th.

    • I don't know what to say without seeing him, but I doubt he is protected. And even if he is picked, I doubt he would stick for the entire year. That said, if he really has turned some corners, then there is room. It may be at the expense of another prospect, though.
    • Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but I didn’t see it. Was two weeks before this thread.
    • And the Rays announcers are really good. Much better than the buffoons who chatter during Os games
    • This is a really gripping series. I’ve never been so engaged by two teams I don’t really care about... although I want the Rays to win, of course. The Dodgers and Nats are the evil children of the NL.
    • It is in the last 30 seconds of this 50-minute podcast, but FWIW they had the Hartford (Rockies AA) play by play guy as a guest Nevin expert, and skimming Vavra at the end he said he thought Vavra would have had a good chance to make the Yard Goats this year (i.e., do the Low-A to AA double bump in 2020). The other Nevin nuggets were August 2019 Eastern League Player of the Month, and giving the near 1B only 2019 positional context as in part being driven by having Colton Welker as a teammate.
    • Nice to hear the tidbits on Baumler from the Instructional League.  I know folks are going to point out the nature of what is reported is overwhelmingly positive, and they are right, of course.  Still, this last draft was performed with heavy analytics and without in person or in competition video for the spring 2020 season in college and HS baseball and without in-person workouts.  IMO, the positive comments are an early vindication of our draft strategy and the two HS prospects we invested big $ in with the expectation that they were essentially second or third round talents.  The early word from various quotes from Matt Blood is that Mayo and Baumler are who we thought/hoped they were or better.
    • I don't see him getting picked.  Do we have the space on the 40 man for him?
