  1. 1. Who is the #13 and#14 prospects?

    • Carter Baumler and Terrin Vavra
    • Hudson Haskin and Terrin Vavra
    • Ryan McKenna and Adam Hall
    • Coby Mayo and Carter Baumler
    • Terrin Vavra and Hudson Haskin

The draft reports on Mayo, and recent fluff piece from instructionals, make it seem like he has huge upside. Who would I rather have in my org? That guy. He could be similar to Gunnar Henderson, though without the SS potential.

I was thinking Vavra in here, and Baumler looks like he has potential too, but I didn't want to keep Mayo out so I only had one choice there.

I very much doubt McKenna is in the top 20. I know there is value in a legit 4th OF (defensively), but I don't believe in his bat at all. He's more of a 5th OF, IMO, and I'd rather have a ton of guys over him, including everyone else in this poll.

Tony isn't high at all on McKenna, so that eliminates that option. I'm guessing Mayo will be ahead of Baumler as well, as everything I've heard suggests he's the better prospect. So that leaves Haskin and Vavra or Vavra and Haskin. Given that the club is playing Vavra in center field and that he's farther along than Haskin, who from what I understand is super raw, I'm going to go with Vavra and Haskin

Keith Law was the only one I've seen with Hall all that high. He was the next SS more because he was the only SS in the system with any potential of being a major leaguer. We have a lot more depth now. I think we see Hall somewhere in 15-20 range, but will be interested to see where he lands on the list.

I'm guessing Tony went pure upside with Mayo and Baumler.  None of the other pairings clicked "Tony" for me.

Mayo is ahead of Baumler in Tony's poll.

I'd be surprised if Haskin is above them, but what do I know?

Agree with RZ above and will dream on the potential (and large signing bonuses) of Mayo and Baumler.

FWIW, I would take Hall over Mayo/Baumler.  Vavra is a bit of a wild card here - really no idea where Tony will put him.

I would take Hall, Mayo and Baumler over Haskin.  Let's see what the survey says!

If you don't mind me asking, why would you want Hall over them?

I like Hall, but the upside seems pretty replaceable to me.

Well then, there's a pretty good chance I'm wrong and it's Mayo and Baumler :)

It’s about this time whenever we do this experiment, that I realize I don’t know a thing about prospects. But I do think Tony is high on Vavra. I actually thought he would be ahead of Diaz, I don’t think Baumleris so high because he’s only a highschooler with a tremendous amount of risk. Not sure of my guess yet, but Vavra will be one of them.

Hall was ranked 17 last year, behind several players who are still on the board and didn’t play in Bowie this summer.   Based on Tony’s comment in another thread that he wasn’t going to change the order of the incumbent players from last year who didn’t play at the alternate site, I think that rules out the McKenna-Hall choice.

Haskin was picked ahead of Baumler and Mayo, and received a bigger bonus than either of them.   Accordingly, I see no reason either of them would jump Haskin on the list.

So, that leaves Vavra-Haskin or Haskin-Vavra.   I’ve seen Vavra ranked as high as 7th in our system (per Fangraphs), so I’ll go Vavra-Haskin.

Frobby's logic is good, as always.

I think of Mayo and Baumler as the cream of our class, even above Westburg. That's my own bias based on what I've read, I guess. At this point, accounting for draft slot/bonus is a logical way to do this. Add in that Vavra is much higher rated in other places, is more known for his bat and that he may have some upside on the positional value side, and it argues that he/Haskin is the choice.

Even though I explained my vote, I would not be shocked if Tony ranked Mayo and Baumler over Haskin.

    • I'm fine with the personnel changes but I'm a bit at a loss when it comes to cutting the pre and post game shows.
    • I see the opposite.  To me it looks more like someone trying to squeeze every penny out of their asset.  I can't see a potential buyer caring about an expense at this level.
    • In another thread, I looked at the top 5 drafted college hitters from each of 2015-17 to see how fast they reached the majors.   Three made it the year after they were drafted, three in the second year after they were drafted, seven in the third year after they were drafted, and two haven’t made it to the majors yet.   Of the players I listed who made it to the majors within two years, here are their paths (draft no. and position when drafted in parentheses): Swanson (1, SS) - Had an .876 OPS in 22 short season A games the year he was drafted.   Was ranked no. 17 by BA after that season.   Then hit .976 OPS in 21 Carolina League games and .745 in 84 Eastern League games before his August 17 call up. Bregman (2, SS) - Had a .699 OPS in 29 low A games and .839 in 37 A+ games in his draft year, was ranked no. 42 by BA after the season.  Had a .975/1.015 OPS in 62/18 games in AA/AAA the next year before his July 25 call-up. Benintendi (7, OF).    Had a .948/1.011 OPS in 35/18 games in SSA/low A in his draft year, and was ranked no. 15 by BA following that season.   Had a .972/.876 OPS in 34/63 games before his August 2 call-up. Happ (9, OF) - Had an .898/.763 in SSA/low A in 29/38 games the year he was drafted, and was ranked no. 87 by BA.   845/.733 in 69/65 games at high A/AA the next year, and .778 in 19 AFL games, was ranked no. 63.    .977 in 26 AAA games before called up on May 13. Haseley (8, OF) - .730/.694 in 35/18 SSA/low A games in his draft year, was unranked.   .758/.880 in 79/39 games at A+/AA the next year, was ranked no. 100 by BA.  Next year had .837/.847!in 44/18 games in AA/AAA before a June 4 call-up. Hiura (9, 2B) - Had a 1.339/.850 OPS in 15/27 games in rookie league/low A in his draft year, was ranked no. 47 by BA.   Next year had .911/.755 in 50/73 games in A+/AA, followed by .934 in 23 AFL games. Moved up to no. 17 ranking.   Then hit 1.088 OPS in 57 PCL games before his May 14 call-up.
    • This is terrible news if you are a long-time fan. Further adds to the theory that a for-sale sign may be going up in the near future. I'll miss Tom, Dave, Mike, and Rick.

    • Ah yes, I remember when I thought that was old!    Congratulations on completing the first third of your life!   (At least, that’s what I told myself when I hit that milestone.)
    • I doubt they’ll add anyone.   They still have three relatively young play by play announcers (Brown, Arnold, Newman), three relatively new ex-players (McDonald, Roberts, Olson), one veteran PBP guy (Garceau) and the Hall of Famer (Palmer).    I think the younger announcers did a solid job last year and will get better with experience.    That’s plenty of staffing.   Honestly, you could see this coming last year when they hired all these new folks.
