MLB.com looks at the Orioles MiL system

Recommended Posts

Solid article for anyone who didn’t know too much about our system. But nothing really new here for those of us who follow it closely.

They were talking about young international players and it mentions Luis Ortiz and Ofelky Peralta.  From reading previous comments by Blood, I'm assuming he either misspoke or the writer got the second name wrong.  Pretty sure it's Luis Sanchez who reportedly touches mid 90's as a 17-18 yo.

I know Drew Rom is from Kentucky but what league is this article talking about?

Quote

Drew Rom (No. 23) is in Florida after playing competitive games in Kentucky in a league that featured former Major Leaguers Brandon Phillips and Eric Young Jr.

I am pretty sure  Cumberland was not at the Alternate Training Site in Bowie this summer if that is what this is trying to say.

At the Bowie site, the 22-year-old backstop got to hit against and put down signs for pitchers who were further along in their development, even some Major Leaguers, than the type of arms he’d likely have seen with Class A Advanced Frederick.

Rutschman was part of a leadership group of players -- with Henderson, Brett Cumberland, Isaac Mattsonand Brian Gonzalez -- tasked with finding ways to develop a winning culture across all levels of the system.

You are correct.   https://www.masnsports.com/steve-melewski/2020/09/these-three-on-os-farm-looked-to-improve-even-without-games.html   I guess he is talking about Fall Instructs.

Really can't wait to see when some of the international guys are starting to make noise.  It's good that we've got a decently regarded system without much presence from international prospects but the system will have a real shot in the arm once a few of these guys start to produce.

We’d probably know a lot more right now if they’d actually played a season this year.    I’m hoping Tony can ferret out some honest information about what the guys who made it to Fall Instructs are showing.

Could be talking about Luis Ortiz the now 18 yo we signed for $400 in 2019. He’s showed well at instructs according to some reports. Sanchez has also done well too as you’ve mentioned.

    • You just made me spill my coffee.
    • Well let’s go with that scenario.  If that is the case, who plays LF?  Are we moving Hays out of CF and playing Mullins everyday?  Are they going to play Stewart everyday in the OF? I don’t think they will go to Diaz immediately.  If They feel Diaz is ready right now, the Nunez decision makes far more sense. My guess is they will want to at least start him in AAA, if for nothing else, to steal the extra year of service time.  But if they feel that’s short lived, so be it. I would guess he is down there for 4-8 weeks and that assumes he is healthy and performing.
    • Yeah. Maybe. Again I could be wrong but this move to me means Mancini and Mountcastle are going to share 1b/DH.   IF that were the case...this would make more sense.    We will see....
    • But here’s the thing, they didn’t really choose versatility over Nunez.  Stewart is the obviously replacement.  He can play the corner OF spots but he’s not that great out there.  He’s not much better out there than Nunez is at first.     The only ways the Nunez move makes sense to me is if they want Davis and/or Mullins playing a lot more than they should.  But both of those are horrible scenarios and not really helpful to the team.     We are better off with Nunez getting those at bats, cutting Davis once you know when the season is starting and having Mullins be your 4th OFer/defensive replacement/pinch runner.
    • It's what we do around here in the offseason! 😛
    • Def agree re Mullins and this will be my last offer. This is good convo regarding the Os. And as I have said several times I don’t really disagree with you. A cheap player with 30 he potential seems worthy of a spot even if lacking in a viable defensive position.    But I also can’t find reason to fault the Os here for choosing more versatile players over Nunez. If this was a team at the very end of a rebuild Nunez could be a cheap player to drop at 1b/Dh but the fact is they do not have long term solutions in very many spots and the rebuild is still ongoing.    I feel like if the Os progress this move will not matter much either way. But I do acknowledge that this is the type of move that if the Os lag and Nunez continues to improve it will hang harshly on them. I guess at this point I just have a bit more faith in what Elias is doing.    on to other things...
