Thorne, Bordick, Dempsey and Tom Davis amongst those let go

Recommended Posts

I am not going to get too nostalgic over any of these guys.  I just hope the younger crew, who in my opinion have done a decent job for the most part, continue to improve with experience. I expect they probably will.

The only thing I find striking at all is that they're opting not to fund pre and post-game. Though, I wonder what the ratings were on those shows. If they were too low, it may be justified to just have a slightly longer lead in from the broadcast team and a slightly longer post-game banter. I, for one, rarely watched them so I won't miss that component. I like Thorne, but was find with Brown and company this year.

As for everyone else, it's always sad to see people losing jobs, particularly jobs they seem to love (which is the case for several of these guys), but in terms of enjoyment of the broadcast, I'm not all that torn up about it, but I'm sure other's opinions may be different.

Says Thorne had not heard from the Orioles since his contract was renewed last August until last week when he was told he would not be returning.

I just don’t get that at all. Is that how you treat people?

Not really. Think about it. Gary Thorne didn't come to terms until August last year. So he missed basically 1st half of O's season. On top of that it was a 1 year contract. He wasn't fired, he just wasn't resigned. Just like any other FA.

Yeah, that's all fine and good as that's business. With that being said, that doesn't mean I can't be upset that O's are letting go my favorite broadcaster. Which is why I thought it was cruel and stone cold. Many come and go and one day I'll get used to their voices as well but I'll miss my guy G-Thorne.

No, it’s not how I treat people.  :)

It is however how the Orioles treat people.

Has to be. He ran MASN well before Peter had his health issues to begin with.

Elias is baseball ops.

Wow this is really disappointing. Thorne and Palmer was one of the best combos in baseball.

What is going on with all this changes???

Yea, this has zero to do with Elias.

It’s overall just a disrespect on how this organization does things.

But we are run by lawyers and not businessman so it’s not surprising.

No, it’s how they treat people.   Hopefully Elias had nothing to do with it.

Elias has much more important things to focus on as the GM and I would hope he wasn't spending time on this matter.

$. MASN, the orioles and major league baseball as a whole have had negative cash flows this past year, and it doesn't look like that will be improving this year.

It is a very Houston-Luhnow-esque way of dealing with people.

    • What’s the corresponding move to activate Hays?  Looks like just a straight swap with McKenna is likely. Sulser, Lakins, or Tate, could be an option too. With playing in an NL for two games, and having two off days, we may elect to go with a bigger bench and drop an bullpen arm.
    • The ball was in the shadows and dropped like 5 ft outside of the shadows in RF for a hit. I think Franco probably couldn’t see it and got a bad read. A tough L.
    • Means Is only behind Glasnow in WAR, ahead of Cole and Bieber. Good company. I hope the breakout continues.
    • Currently, the pitching staff is 14th in WAR (in the majors), 10th best in walk rate, 17th in total ERA and 7th in BP ERA. Nice numbers considering we apparently have the worst catchers in baseball.  I’m shocked that they could be this awful defensively, game calling, framing, etc...and yet we are finding some early success after building on last year, which wasn’t as bad as suspected. It’s almost as if the catchers defense can be overcome by other factors! (Or people are just clueless as to how to actually judge a C defense)
    • The issue is that you are intentionally taking the GMs statement that the Os are not measuring success by wins as meaning something else....that the Orioles are not trying to win games. And then extrapolating that into the Orioles are trying to lose games.    That simply isn’t what is going on. And I think you know that. I think in general folks are on board with the rebuild. We are also at the point where we are about as far from being competitive as we have been in a long time.      I don’t know how much the pandemic has effected the rebuild, but minor leagues have been shut down for a loooong time.  I can’t help but think it probably cost us a full year.    I don’t know if Hyde will be the manager in 2 months or 2 years.  I really don’t worry about that at all. Right now, I just want to see the Os get better and develop talent.    I would say this is the last year the Os can continue with a mindset of we are not measuring success with wins. I think it is likely that success next year will be marked by small improvement to something along the lines of 75-80 wins.    I am trying to enjoy the moments.    The moments Mancini reminds us of what he can be. The moments Mountcastle reminds us that he could be in the mix for ROY. The moments John Means looks like a real #1 or #2. And yes the moment we get to see AR, Diaz and others crack the lineup.    It’s not the same as fretting over when Hyde rests Santander or who he pitches in the 8th or 9th. But this ain’t Toronto and whether or not we use our historically good closer in the 6th, 11th or ever. Hyde is gonna learn or he won’t. In the end, of the GM gets the talent part, getting someone to manage will be a breeze.
    • Personally, I'm surprised Sisco didn't get charged with a PB.  He has looked bad this year.
    • Yea, to think some people actually bought the idea that no outside food had to do with covid.
