Best Outfield in Baseball?

Haha

Cedric Mullins: 2.7 WAR

Orioles OF: 2.5 WAR

From the same table, aside from Mullins (2.1) giving Baltimore 1st place in CF, Oriole LF (0.4) is 5th in MLB and RF (0.1) 12th (but for RF, consider how recently Santander--already at 0.4--has returned). And so SteveA's point is not at all ludicrous. It's at 1st base, 2nd base, DH, and Catcher that we are in negative territory among the non-pitching positions.

Say next year, our 3-some of Mullins, Hays, and Santander stay healthy... could we have the best OF in the AL?  I figure the Dodgers will be impossible to unseat in MLB.

Hays just made two very strong throws in two innings vs. Tampa.

WHEN Hays, Mullins, and Santander are playing, we might already have the best defensive outfield in baseball.

Not if Trout is 100% healthy.

When that outfield manages to play 135 games a season together is when I follow the O's on a daily basis again.

Mullins' breakout and DJ Stewart holding serve really jams up Diaz.

Offseason I was anxious for Diaz/Hays/Santander 1st string with Mullins/Stewart backups.    Hays' LF case isn't as good as Mullins' CF, but I've seen enough I'm curious to see him in near everyday reps if he can take it.

Hays/Mullins/Santander with Stewart as primary reserve....I guess this is what the MLB roster getting tough to crack for a medium good prospect starts to look like.

I hope we hold Mancini to compete in 2022, but I feel zero immediacy to get his name on any kind of extension.   It could be a tough roster for him to make by 2023 if one of 3 things happen:

-Stewart can grow anymore (2023 = Age 29 Arb1 Stewart v. Age 31 FA Mancini)

-Player Development can get something from Diaz or one of the other DH/OF's bubbling up behind him.    Dorrian?

-Kjerstad in time proves to be about what Elias thought he was.

Any of those three could give a MLB-minimum DH to use $$$ at other positions if RMC/Hays/Mullins/Santander can hold the 1B/OF jobs.

I hope we don't sell any of the above for more future Wins, but hope the situation is right for one of them to anchor a deal for present Wins in the not too distant future.    Somebody has to be Joe Musgrove or Daz Cameron, even if you can leverage depth to package three or four pieces for your nugget.

    • Beat me to it. This team is starting Steve Wilkerson, Maikel Franco and Pedro Severino almost everyday. The lowest ERA of any current active starter is 5.95. The bullpen has three relievers with an ERA under 4.07. Pat Valaikia has the most PAs at 2B and has a .529 OPS. No outfielder has an OPS over .700 besides Cedric Mullins.  Outside of that we're probably just cursed. lol
    • Yep, he hasn't hurt us or cost us a game this year.   At worst he's taken a roster spot that some slightly less bad reliever might have taken.   But we can't DFA him until after the season if we want to keep him. The decision to keep him or not will be based in entirely on how he projects in the minds of Elias and company, not how he pitches now.
    • Maybe not, but I also worry about how much of his immense 2021 gains will evaporate without whatever it is that he has been putting on his fingers. If we could get a Bedard-like deal for him right now, I think it is something that should be considered very seriously, especially since being competitive by 2023 seems more and more like a pipe dream with the early returns (or lack thereof) on the first batch of prospects like Akin, Kremer, Zimmerman, Lowther, etc. Hell, I would even consider selling high on Mullins at this point. Between Means, Mancini, Mullins, and Fry, and the virtually unprecedented rate of injuries this year, we could absolutely clean up at the deadline with an eye on 2023 or, more realistically, 2024.
    • Good article here: https://www.mlb.com/news/baltimore-orioles-2021-draft-preview Callis: This is not a good Draft for college bats, especially at the top. There is [Louisville catcher] Henry Davis, and then there is a dropoff. But there are four really good high school shortstops. At least a couple of those guys could be available at No. 5. And there's two really good college pitchers in [Vanderbilt righties] Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker. And there's an excellent high school pitcher in [Oklahoma prep righty] Jackson Jobe. … While I don't think it's a deep Draft, I think the Orioles are in a good spot at pick No. 5, where they're going to get a really good player. … Unless they [make some] kind of deal or something, which has been rumored, they're going to get a player who might be on pretty equal footing with the guy who does go number one.
    • Sonny Boy Williamson! My bad. Zepp did it too but just another cover. A very GOOD cover, but just another...
    • Well, you aren’t putting all your eggs in his basket.  They could pay him #1 money and still be able to draft a lot of players they like.
    • Sideys from my newest... First is... an old Muddy Waters? I think...
