Keith Law is a fan.

25. Connor Norby, 2B, East Carolina
Previously No. 49

Norby has performed his way into Day 1 status, hitting .415/.475/.688 this spring for the Pirates with newfound pop, although he’s limited to second base by a fringy arm. He really helped himself with a solid showing against Vanderbilt in the super regionals, hitting the best pitching he’d faced all year, with good at bats and a couple of knocks against Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker. He has a compact swing and uses the whole field well, with wrist strength to drive the ball the other way. Norby is a second baseman and projects to stay there, and his bat should make him at least a regular at that spot, even if he doesn’t come into much power.

I am bias, but I watch a lot of East Carolina baseball, and I would love to see us draft Connor Norby at 41 today.  If the O's are looking for another big time college bat which seems to be what they have been focusing on, I think this guy fits the mold and he isn't another OF which is nice.

Pumped about this one!

You have fished your wish!

Would love to get a scouting report, if you have time.

The nice thing about drafting college position players early is that if they can get signed quickly, they can play a couple months this year at Delmarva or Aberdeen.

More than halfway through the second round, Taylor and Chandler are still on the board. Both would be interesting overslot options in comp round B.

Both are still on the board through round 2. Don't know what their number is, but one or both will be available at #65.

Yeah, I'd be happy with Chandler here.  Really want to add some arms to the org.  Mace or Burns if Chandler isn't signable.

Oof. Reed Trimble not particularly highly ranked, certainly not the overslot.

Helium guy in the 2021 college season.

44 by FanGraphs is pretty decent for #65

yeah, so pirates go underslot at 1.1 and then go lottery ticket overslots with a HS pitcher and HS OF. Orioles go underslot and then take a college 2B and a college OF with their next two picks.

Kinda makes me mad when the Marlins take Khalil Watson and the HS Catcher with their first two picks. The padres just casually take the 6'7" HS OF Wood with their second pick without going underslot with their first pick.

I feel like it's just a myth that you have to go big underslot in order to afford HS studs.

Absolutely, seems to be a divergent opinions, neither Keith Law and MLB Pipeline had him in their top 100.

Presumably the Orioles viewed him closer to how Fangraphs does.

Just meant to say that he wasn't a clear overslot.

I guess I don't understand the almost complete lack of pitching in Elias drafts.   Don't we need to add pitching to the system and into the pipeline as well?

2019 -- 2 pitchers in the first 12 picks (11 rounds)

2020 -- 1 pitcher in the 6 pick, 5 round draft

2021 -- so far no pitchers

So top 21 picks over a 3 year period, and just 3 pitchers.

    • By the time the Orioles reach agreements with Tavera and Arias they should still have somewhere around $3.5 million left out of their $6.26 million dollar pool of money to fill out the class with another 12 to 15 signees. Baseball America projects Tavera to get 1.5 to 2 million dollars. Arias was not in their top 30 list.  Players outside the top 30 historically get less than $1 million.   So I'm hoping they still have $3.5 million to pass out in 6 figure bonuses. That could get them 10 players in the $400,000 to $300,000 range. This January they gave their top 2 signees combined $2.5 million.  Then signed  6  more between $400 and 300 thousand.  Then still sprinkled in bonuses $200,000 and below.  Some bonuses weren't announced so I'm thinking they were 5 figure bonuses The  best player, especially at the plate, this year was year de Los Santos who cost them $350,000. Their best prospect, to me, is the 1.3 million dollar power bat and power armed catcher Basallo.
    • That's what it is. Whatever exactly it is... some Nike thing. https://news.sportslogos.net/2021/04/06/red-sox-wear-yellow-nike-launches-new-mlb-city-connect-uniform-series-for-2021/baseball/
    • Lacy has 41 walks in 52 IP in A+ right now too.
    • One of the 13 balls was after an 0-2 count and a foul ball that went over the left handed batter's head.   The next pitch was a low and away breaker for a swinging strike three.   It was a nice command and control moment. Not sure if the catcher told him to hit the bull, or if he did it on his own.
    • Boston is one of the 7 teams to have a “City Connect” uniform this season.
    • 5 perfect innings, 7 K’s, 41 of 54 pitches for strikes.   Not a single ball hit in the air in fair territory; 8 ground outs to go with the 7 K’s. That’s what you call finishing your regular season with a bang.  Rom closes his AA season with a 3.83 ERA   In September, he threw 14 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 walk, striking out 18.
    • No one argued that the line played crappy. The criticism of his passing has been exactly what I stated.    I think he does some impressive stuff but also think he’s makes stupid mistakes and untimely blunders like this game.  The 2 fumbles hurt big time. The third that everyone wants to dismiss is an indecisive error IMO. The RB has to secure the ball if it’s handed off. If Lamar decides too late to keep then tries to  pull it back in and causes a fumble we should blame the RB? Either way, I’ve stated my preferences in the past. I don’t need to do so again and guys here mentioning Flacco won’t cause me to do it either. Joe was done when he left here and it was time for a change. I don’t think the Ravens ever win the big one with Jackson. I’ll be shocked and happy if they do. But to me the mistakes like the ones in the last game are obviously a problem and caused by the fact that he wants to run the ball and that’s his preference. A number of his sacks are also for that very reason.
