(Edit: Orioles get 1st pick after walkoff homer by Diamondbacks)

Recommended Posts

Lots of season left but the 2018 Orioles played .290 ball and the Diamondbacks are playing .310 ball.

So if this is indeed a worse team than the 2018 squad they should be able to run down the Diamondbacks.

How are they going to be the worst Orioles team ever?   They’d have to go 9-40 the rest of the season to be as bad as  the 2018 team.

I do think it’s pretty amazing that there is a team worse than us, though.   Maybe two, depending on how things go for Texas the rest of the way.

I'm not sure they're the 1st,2nd or even the 3rd worst team as currently constructed. I think the Cubs,Dbacks and Nationals claim those spots. Since throwing the combined no hitter against the Dodgers on June 24th the Cubs have gone 10-32 good for a league worst .238 winning percentage over that stretch. There's a lot of terrible in MLB right now.

They're on pace for 54 wins, .336 winning percentage.  Their lowest mark before this year is 47 wins in 2018.  They'd have to go 10-39 (.204) the rest of the way to be the worst team in modern O's history.  The 2002 team finished the year 4-32, so something like that is plausible if unlikely.

The very first league team called the Orioles was the American Association club of 1882.  They finished 19-54-1.  If you ignore the draw that's a 42-win pace over 162 games.  So the current squad would have to go 3-46 (.061) the rest of the way to eclipse that mark.

The only way somebody can say this is the worst O's team in history is if they just woke up from a four year nap, because every team iteration of this team going back until 18 is worse than this one.

This only matters if you're pining for Elijah Green in next year's draft.  I was for a while but after this past draft I don't have any confidence that Elias would take a high school outfielder with the #1 pick.  There seems to be a lot of good college talent in next year's draft so finishing with the 2nd pick in the draft is not going to cause me to lose any sleep.

The most amazing thing of all is the 2018 team being that bad.  Underachieved by 20 games at least. It’s remarkable.

Would love to see an in-depth video analyzing the 2018 Orioles and how when everything went wrong, everything really went wrong for that team. It was the perfect storm of suckitude.

I don't know. Arizona has now won two straight and now are just one game ahead of us in the all important win column. Plus 12 of our next 15 games are against teams either in first or second place. And 19 of Arizona's next 26 games are against teams in third place or worse including last place Pittsburgh and last place Texas. We might be primed to make our move!

Calling 2018 a team is a stretch.  More like a collection of individuals who wore the same uniform.  The attitude was epitomized by Manny saying he wanted to play shortstop to maximize his free agency value.  Talent wise, they were way better than the 2021 Orioles, but the all about me attitude sunk that team.

Hindsite of course, but the window slammed in 2016.  2017 the disfunction was rampant and doing nothing about it produced 2018.

The 2018 team was the worst ever, easily.  It certainly wasn't the most talented team ever but they had more talent than what their record ended up.  It'd be a hard act to pass.

Yep, 2017 was the indicator.  They lied to themselves that they could compete in 2018.

Whenever anyone says chemistry doesn't matter, all you have to do is point toward the 2018 Orioles.

    • It’s pretty hard to find good comps for Mancini, and I’d say his offensive performance in 2022 will have a lot of influence on his future value.   Mancini has a career OPS+ of 115.  Last year Kyle Schwarber was coming off a very bad 2020 (88 OPS+) but got a 1/$10 mm contract based on his career 113 OPS+.   This year he put up 148 OPS+ but in 113 games.   I’m hearing he may get 3/$60 mm.    David Peralta had a 115 OPS+ through 2019, when he signed an extension for 3/$22 mm.   He was a little older than Mancini; the extension covered his ages 32-34 seasons.  Mancini will be 30 this year.    Then you have a guy like Wil Myers who had a 110 OPS+ through 2016 including 115 OPS+ that year, and signed for 6/$83 mm including $22.5 mm/yr for three FA years.    Mark Trumbo had a career 113 OPS+ and was coming off his 47 homer, 122 OPS+ campaign when he signed for 3/$37.5 mm with the O’s.   Not clear he could have got close to that elsewhere.   Long and short, Mancini is in a sort of in-betweenish spot, and how he does in 2022 will matter a lot to his FA value.
    • I honestly don't think the ravens win another game this season. Cleveland is coming off a bye and hasn't had to watch film on another team in three weeks. The Packers are on bye this week, will be well rested and will be seeing a secondary without 3 of its top 4 players. The Bengals barring a serious Burrow injury are playing well, with an elite level of offense, loss this week not withstanding. The Rams are pretty stacked and healthy. Maybe the ravens can get the steelers at home but I seriously doubt it.  At the end of the season they may be running out some players who weren't even in the league last week with the rate of their injuries.
    • It’s really hard for me to see a path to the playoffs right now.     I know things happen and they probably only need 2 more wins but no Humphrey vs what we have left is devastating.  I know it seems like he has been down this year but he really has played well overall and the secondary depth is just decimated.
    • It is hard to believe that Lamar was being talked about as an MVP candidate for a few weeks this season. He is playing terrible right now and has been for awhile, his numbers on the season as a whole aren't impressive either. He's only thrown for more than 1 TD in 2 games. I think if it weren't for that huge 2nd half against the Colts backup DBs the storyline for most of the season would've been whats wrong with Lamar? Take out the Colts game and these are some of his stats for the season, pretty bad. 11 TDs 12 INTs 61.07% completion
    • There were plenty of bad/missed calls and the Ravens benefited from most of them, Ravens fans just love to whine about the refs.
