Trade Target: Adalberto Mondesi

Recommended Posts

While we're targeting guys that may be available, one I thought of was Adalberto Mondesi.  He is playing in his first arb eligible season, so he has 2 more before he's a UFA.  He missed a significant amount of the season, but is one of the more polarizing players in terms of performance when he's on the field.

What would it take and do we think he'd actually be available?

“He may not be a guy that plays more than 100 games a year, best-case scenario,” Moore said at the time. The GM emphasized that the Royals “love Mondi to death” and have no plans to move on from him but simply “can’t, obviously, count on him as an everyday player.”

Again, why would we be trading with a team that is also in rebuild phase? I would think we would need to start with DL Hall and Westburg to get in the conversation and there's no way we should be doing that. Much more likely to go to a contender with a 1-2 year window and we're not there yet.

People should be thinking of B-C prospects to target for Mancini and Santander.

I just don’t see us subtracting anything from the MILB system. I see us going with a vet like Galvis or Isglesias for next year to provide stability at SS. I think we’ll try and cover 2B and 3B with a combo of Urias, Mateo, Jones, and Bannon.

No.  He's never healthy and his on base percentage is .287 for his career.  His strikeout to walk ratio is horrendous.

So outside of not staying healthy and sucking, he's a good target.

Really?  The guy is making 2.5 mil right now, and the GM says he likes him, but can't trust him.  Sounds like lip service.  Assume he makes something like $6 mil and $9 mil in arb 2 and 3.  Seems like a potential non-tender.

Seems like it might not even take a top 10 prospect, and if healthy he's way better than anything we've got.  And if he hits, then we've got ourselves a possible extension candidate next year.

Maybe the price is not that high but all I'm saying is if KC is looking to nontender in pretty much the same situation as us, then why should we be looking to acquire him at the same cost plus prospects? Again, a contender needing an infielder makes so much more sense and they will be able to offer a better package of prospects than we will.

Because we need to take some risks to acquire talent to maximize our window.  We can't buy a lot of FA in 2023.  I'm sure KC is thinking the same way, but potentially have a bad taste with the health concerns.

Same concept as @Sports Guy has with Champan and Glasnow.  Good thoughts, acquire them if the price makes sense.  Spend some of your capital now to maximize 2023-2026.

I don't think those examples made sense either. I'd rather just sign a guy. Plenty of infielders out there ranging from Josh Harrison to Carlos Correa. No reason to give up prospect and money.

Jonathan Villar is balling out lately. Would be down for a reunion if the price is cheap enough but he probably played his way out of our price range.

Never really understood why we traded the guy in the first place.  We didn’t get anything of value and have spent the last 2 seasons trying to replace him and he’s still tearing it up.
