Game Notes

  • Austin Hays and his 15 game hitting streak starts the game on the bench
  • Trey Mancini, who has been fighting an oblique and general soreness, is back in the lineup for the first time in several days, at DH
  • 24 year old rookie Carlos Hernandez starts for KC.   He made his debut in September last year.  This year he has a 3.57 ERA in 29 games, 8 as a starter.   He has allowed 2 or fewer runs in 6 of his 8 starts, averaging over 5 innings per start.   He has struck out just under a batter an inning, with a low HR rate and a slightly high walk rate.
  • The Orioles have won the season series with KC regardless of tonight's outcome, as they are 4-2 against them.   In every season in Oriole history except 1954 and 1955 (pre-expansion when they only faced 7 opponents), the Orioles have won the season series against at least two opponents.  ( In 1954 they did not win it against anybody, and in 1955 they won it against just one team).   Since then, the low is 2, in 2018, when they won 2 of 3 from the Braves and 3 of 4 from the Mets and lost the season series to every other opponent.   This year so far, KC is the only team they are assured to have won the season series against.   They still have a chance against Texas (2-1 with 3 games remaining) and the Yankees (7-9 with 3 games remaining).
  • The Orioles have won 2 games of this 4 game series, matching the best they have done this year in a 4 game set.   Winning a 3rd game tonight would be a season best.  The Orioles have been swept in 4 game series 3 times, all on the road (@CWS, @CLE, @TB).   The Orioles have gone 1-3 in 4 game series 3 times (SEA, BOS, @TOR).  The Orioles have gone 2-2 in a 4 game series twice (NYY,  @DET).   The Orioles have two more 4 game series remaining after tonight:  Toronto this weekend, and Texas later this month, both at home.
  • The Orioles had their lowest attendance ever Tuesday night for a game with no attendance restrictions at Camden Yards, 4981, then broke that record last night by 16 when the paid attendance was 4965.   Tonight might be similar, although the beautiful weather, exciting comeback last night, John Means on the mound, and Thursday being "almost the weekend" will probably add at least a few dozen fans to prevent a new record.   Most of the rest of the season will likely be higher, due to weekend games naturally drawing more than weekdays once school is in session, and weekday series against teams that draw better (Yankees & Red Sox).   The only game after tonight where they might approach the record again could be the Thursday night, September 23 game vs the Rangers.

Ouch.   Give up a HR to a guy who has 4 in 954 career at bats.

Then strike out the guy who's hit 42 this year.

By the way, what the hell has gotten into Perez?  31 years old, never hit more than 27.   Now he's got 42 with 20+ games left to play?   That's positively Brady-esque.

So ..... Does Mullins get the 30 HR and 30 SBs this year?

3 homers and 4 stolen bases in 25 games seem well within reach.

He's made a remarkable recovery and handled various spotlights well. But I bet Trey will be awfully relieved when the season is over and he can rest up for an extended time finally.

Darn it--3 consecutive hits and no run. Severino not the best guy in general to send home (although I didn't see the play). Doesn't Benitendi have a good arm or is it the opposite?
