Mancini and Severino exit with nagging injuries

Recommended Posts

So in tonight’s game, Mancini left with “right side soreness” while Severino left with “upper leg issues.”

Trey has been battling an oblique injury, something that is never good for a baseball player. Severino has been having quad and groin issues for a couple weeks, something that isn’t good for a catcher.

If you were Elias/Hyde, would you just 60 day IL them both like Mateo? An oblique isn’t something to play around with and with less than 20 games to go, why risk it? For Pedro, a leg/groin injury isn’t going to get better squatting behind the plate.

For Trey, you can call up Tyler Nevin and add an extra pitcher to the 40. For Severino, you can select either Nick Cuiffo (most likely) or Brett Cumberland (less likely) as the catcher.

Or would you just let them be “day to day” and go with a shorter bench and risk it in a lost season?

Trey has put in a fine full season (562 PAs) and tirelessly handled all the extra publicity and commentary from spring training through especially the Derby. He's recently recovered (in terms of cancer timelines) from a life-threatening illness. Let the man rest up all he needs to be in tip-top shape for 2022.

I'd like to see what other catching talent there is in the O's system. Can't be worse than Severino behind the plate and it's not like he's Buster Posey in terms of run production (83 OPS+).

In an interview with Roch yesterday, Trey talked about how weak and out of shape he was at the end of his treatment, and how he realized he would have to start working out intensely immediately at this time last year to get back in shape for the season.  And he did.

So he went straight from months of debilitating cancer treatments immediately to months of hard core workouts to rebuild himself for the season, to spring trip and then the grind of the last 144 games.

I think it's probably time for a bit of time off and rest and relaxation.  End his season now, and let him take a couple months to relax before he starts preparing for next year.

And maybe the team should dictate that because Trey seems like the kind of guy who would not make that choice on his own.

Great post, I agree. To paraphrase the farmer in "Babe":

"That'll do Trey, that'll do!"
