The pirates paid Quintana $2 million?
Quintana and Lyles had bad ERAs, 6.43 and 5.15 respectivley. But Quintana had a 3.75 xFIP. Lyles was 4.73. The only difference is that Lyles pitched 180 innings and Quintana pitched 63.
I don’t get how that costs $5 million more.
I expect Lyles to be around a 6-7 ERA by the end of the year, maybe eat some innings but he hasn’t really done that much in his career so it’s not something I’m going to count on. They could’ve paid a lot less looking for players who want the opportunity to prove themselves and gotten very similar results.
I understand the notion that Baltimore has to pay more for free agents, especially right now. But that doesn’t mean you give $7m to Jordan F’ing Lyles. Elias has done wrong here, IMO.
They've lost over 100 games in 2018, 2019, and 2021. They seem likely to be just as bad in 2022. They play in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. Getting any free agent to come here is going to result in an overpay.
