All 2021 1st Year Minor League All-Star team

Recommended Posts

Just for fun, I'd thought I'd put together a 1st year all-star lineup for 2021. They don't necessarily have to be the best prospect, but who had the best season in their debut professional seasons.

Need at least 100 PAs and must have played the majority of their time at that position or 35 IP for a starter, 20 as a reliever to qualify. If a player made the overall 2021 Hangout minor league All-Star team they were not eligible.

1B: Jacob Teter (A-)                  - .305/.401/.492/.893, 11 2b, 3 HR in 137 PAs
2B: Angel Tejada (DSL)             - .326/.404/.435/.839 6 2b, 0 HR in 104 PAs
SS: Frederick Bencosme (DSL)- .310/.365/.451/.816   6 2b, 2 HR in 158 PAs
3B: Coby Mayo (FCL/A-)          -  .319/.426/.555/.981 14 2B, 9 HR in 216 PAs
LF: Donta Williams (FCL/A-)     -  .291/.441/.360/.802 4 2B, 0 HR in 111  PAs
CF: Colton Cowser (FCL/A-)    -  .375/.490/.492/.982 8 2B, 2 HR in 149 PAs
RF: John Rhodes (FCL/A-)       -   .259/.350/.352/.701 4 2B, 2 HR in 123 PAs
C- Samuel Basallo (DSL)           -  .244/.344/.420/.764 8 2B, 5 HR in 151 PAs
SP: Cesar Alvarez (DSL)            - 2.49 ERA, 19 BB and 63 K in 47 IP
RP: Elchero Francisca (DSL)      - 3.08 ERA, 23 BB and 39 K in 38 IP

Nice list!   Worth noting the ages of the DSL players (baseball age protocol):

Basallo 16

Tejada 17

Alvarez 18

Benscome 18

Junior Lara, 17, missed the start of the season and fell short of your 100 PA threshold (74), but he sure looked like someone to watch (.328/.425/.492).   He played mostly CF and wouldn’t have beaten out Cowser even if he qualified, but I thought I’d mention him here as someone to watch in the FCL next year.

Denoyer pitched in 3 games for the 2019 GCL Orioles.   Just saying.

Reliever was tough because most first year guys that are good were starters. I also would have swore Denoyer was one of those free agent signees after the 2020 draft. Thanks for the catch.

Worth noting that Basallo led all of the Orioles DSL players in HRs and was at the playing age of 16 this year. It would really be interesting if they start him in the GCL next year.

Do you have any doubt that they will?   I certainly expect it.   He’ll be very young for the league, but I don’t see any reason for him to repeat the DSL.  FWIW, he’ll be 10 days younger than Darrel Hernaiz was when he played in the GCL in 2019.

Denoyer was a free agent signing on August 5th, 2019

Would be really nice to see a catching tandem of Basallo and Willems in the FCL next year. That’s some upside.

I assume Willems will be gunning to make Delmarva.

I'm sure he will but odds are him starting for FCL Orange and Basallo for FCL Black or vice versa assuming they have two teams again.

I would think he will be along with Hernandez despite Hernandez's relatively lackluster pro debut down there.

I would be pleasantly surprised if Willem made Delmarva. I'm not sure why it took him so long to get started and why they shut him down so quickly, but his struggles in his limited playing time suggest he might be more of a long term project vs a fast mover. My guess he will be on one of the FCL teams next year.
