As an O's Fan, I can rest easier

I didn't care much at the outset except rooting against BOS and MFY.

Wanted to root against the Giants partly out of sour grapes (Yaz, Gaus), but then LA is a good statue to topple.聽

Rays, Brewers, Cards, ChiSox, meh (though La Russa would've been a good story).

But the Braves have emerged as a great underdog team to root for, and that NLCS clincher was a classic; it doesn't get any better than that for pure baseball drama (that whole series, for that matter). How can you beat the likes of Seager, Bellinger, Betts, Taylor, et al. in the clutch? But the pitching... i.e., the Bullpen... a theme that seemed to take preeminence ever since our bitter loss to KC in '14.

I grew up watching the Braves and Cubs on WTBS and WGN, respectively.聽 I was a big Dale Murphy fan (he married a girl from my hometown and I met him a few times - he's good friends with the R.E.M. guys, too).聽 Nearly every summer day, my mom would have the Cubs game on and then the Braves in the evening.聽 I was a die-hard Orioles fan, but I rarely got to see them play on TV.聽 聽They would show up occasionally on a Game of the Week broadcast on a Saturday, but that was bout it.聽 I would catch the scores and an occasional highlight on the local news stations, but to see them play a full game on TV was a rare treat.

Having said that - how can you not cheer for Freddie Freeman?聽 He is a good ball player that doesn't seem to take himself too seriously and really enjoys playing.聽 I have heard him mic'd up during games and he is very engaging and personable.聽 I feel awful for Acuna who has to sit on the side and watch his team advance without him.聽 That has to be tough for him.聽 I really like watching Altuve play, but I want to see the Braves win this one.

As much as I hate to do this, I will have to pull for the Cheatstros.聽聽

The Braves won 88 games and wouldn't have even been the 4th best team in the AL East.聽 The fact they got a聽free pass in the playoffs despite being mediocre most of the year because they happen to play in a crap division doesn't sit well with me.聽

How is winning a series against a 98 win team and winning a series against a 106 win team a free pass?

At a payroll of $136 million the Braves are what I would hope the Orioles will be in 2024.聽 A rising team, full of young talent, that the owner and GM have identified as needing some costly veteran talent to get over the hump to the next level of competition.

The Orioles have looked good over stretches too.聽

Winning the Series is more about getting hot at the right time.聽聽

Almost any team could聽be thrown into the playoffs and have a shot.聽 I bet that if instead of a wildcard, they had a lottery to determine who gets that slot that team would have about as a good a chance as the team that qualified.

I guess I don't get your point.聽 聽You just think the trophy should be handed to the team with the best record and there be no playoffs or World Series?聽 聽You say you HAVE to root for Houston because Atlanta is somehow illegitimate because they won 7 fewer games out of 162 than Houston?

I mean you are certainly free to root for whoever you want, but I guess I just don't really understand the point your previous post was trying to make.

No I don't, but for a team with a record barely above 500 to be given a shot, while teams with better records didn't even get in, takes a little polish off the trophy for me.聽聽On top of that,聽 you have another round (the wild card game) which the Braves didn't have to get past even though they were worse than both wild card teams.

The NFL has a similar problem聽 聽They've had two teams with losing records make the playoffs recently, because they played in terrible divisions.聽 But at least with the NFL, better teams generally tend to win the playoffs, so whilst theoretically a 7-9 team like the WFT last year, could somehow go on a run and win聽the Superbowl, its extremely unlikely to happen.聽 The MLB playoffs are much more of a聽crapshoot.聽

Most teams that win their postseason do so because they get hot at the right time. Rarely does the best team from the regular season always win, in any sport.

If Atlanta wins, they will have earned it..just like the 85 win Cardinals earned the WS title years ago.

Yeah, I don't really get this either.聽 聽

Sure, there's the argument for getting hot at the right time, but as SG said the team that wins the most games rarely wins the whole thing...in any sport.聽聽

Your division is your division...but who had better records that didn't get in?聽 The Braves won 88 games.聽 The Brewers and Cardinals won 95 and 90 games, respectively and they made it in.聽 If your gripe is that the Cardinals won two more games and had to play the Wild Card game, I kinda get that.聽 It sucks to have your entire 162 game season come down to one winner-take-all game but at some point everyone's season comes down to a win and survive or a win and advance game.聽聽

Anyway, the Giants and the Dodgers won 107 and 106 games.聽 San Diego won 79 after cratering in September.聽 Two of the Padres losses came at the hands of the Braves, though by that point in the month I think they were already ruled out.

So which teams with better records didn't even get in the playoffs?聽聽

Why is it so hard to to just have a balanced schedule. Every team plays every team the same amount of times. You then take the top 6, 8 or whatever teams in each league. Or forget leagues and just take the top 12 or 14 teams period. Seed them by record. Boom! Done.聽

    • Cardinals were聽smart enough not to resign Pujols when he hit his 30鈥檚 knowing he would never be able to match the production from the first decade of his career. With the way the Orioles have聽operated during the Angelos era they almost certainly resign a player of that caliber. It鈥檚 a mistake you can鈥檛 make when you鈥檙e not the Yankees or Dodgers. The Cardinals usually avoid these kind of crippling moves and that keeps them competitive. With Elias hopefully we see that with the O鈥檚.聽
    • Marte, who may considered the best CF option via FA, was just signed by the Mets.
    • On the contrary, it is completely true. The team will have ebbs聽and flows, based on random chance And misfortune such as is聽happening to Kjested right now, But if you avoid long-term contracts, all of which are stupid, trade your guys at peak value and restock the farm, and there鈥檚 no reason why you can鈥檛 continually be a positive team. The Cardinals do it and they never have a single digit draft choice they always draft in the high teens, and yet they still have a good team over and over.
    • Going into 2009, Tillman was BA鈥檚 no. 22 prospect, Matusz no. 25, Arrieta no. 67. 聽 Britton wasn鈥檛 ranked yet but was no. 63 the next year. 聽Brad Bergesen was the reigning Eastern League pitcher of the year. 聽 David Hernandez had led the league. In strikeouts. 聽 So, it was a more impressive group than your post suggests. 聽聽
    • Even worse聽living with the knowledge that Cardinals owner聽Bill DeWitt Jr. could have been the Orioles owner all this聽time, but thanks to Peter Angelos outbidding him it never happened.聽
    • Nothing happens til it happens, but can we glean anything meaningful from what the insiders say? 聽 鈥滾istening聽to offers鈥 means nothing. Does anyone NOT listen to offers? However, that鈥檚 probably indicates less interest than聽a term like鈥 鈥滵angling.鈥 What does that mean? Is GM A calling up GM B and saying,鈥澛爃ey, I got this hot guy, and he can be yours! All I need is XX.鈥 Is聽GM A being coy and hitting that MAAAAAAYBE he鈥檒l listen鈥? Regardless, it probably indicates more desire to trade, but maybe not as much as鈥 鈥淓ager to deal鈥 or 鈥渟eeking the best matchup鈥 which is where GM A is calling up everyone in the Rolodex and saying,鈥 Have聽I got a deal for you!聽AND if you ACT NOW鈥o? Well, how about鈥︹tc etc鈥 All 聽those terms indicate at least partially dealing from a position of 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have聽to鈥 鈥淚鈥檓 in no hurry鈥 鈥渋f you don鈥檛, someone else will,鈥 and so on. But pity the guys who鈥 鈥滱re willing to eat most of the contract鈥︹ the fools who rush in, and then find it veeeeery expensive to rush back out.. poor San Diego would be less poor if they hadn鈥檛 flung all that cash at Mr Hosmer, but they did, and he has been smiling ever since鈥nd they..鈥 are willing to eat most of his contract鈥 Anyway, where does that leave the Orioles? We鈥檙e listening. Sure we are. Everyone listens except your cat in the backyard who doesn鈥檛 want to come in yet. We are 鈥渄angling鈥濃. That means we鈥檙e listening a bit more earnestly, but still it鈥檚 our call. Nothing will happen unless it鈥檚 very good for the Bmore boys. So let鈥檚聽see what kind of horse trader Mike is, and what can he bring home in return for the shiny bauble he is dangling鈥
    • I think we are going to have to get some favorable results from our own young pitchers to improve significantly in 2022. Last year was a bottom 20% outcome in that regard compared to the range of possible outcomes from that group. 聽 聽If things break the other way in 2022 we could see a lot more wins. 聽 But you can鈥檛 just expect that to happen given their performance to date. 聽聽
