As an O's Fan, I can rest easier

Why is it so hard to to just have a balanced schedule. Every team plays every team the same amount of times. You then take the top 6, 8 or whatever teams in each league. Or forget leagues and just take the top 12 or 14 teams period. Seed them by record. Boom! Done.

Because you need to go head to head with your division to see who comes out on top.  Division games matter more as it's a direct +1/-1 in the standings.

Any time I see someone on here arguing for a balanced schedule or a division re-alignment all I can see is someone who's upset/jealous at the Yankees/Sox and what they spend and wanting an easy way out.

I think it's only about money.  Inter divisional games tend to be the rivals that ticket buyers turn out for.  Also, divisional teams tend to be closer so travel costs are less (pennies on the MLB dollar but the owners have proven to be cheap).

You can have  a balanced schedule and still have divisions.   I don't think the MLB would ever do this because division games are generally better attended and it generally makes the travel schedule easier.  If they did I think they should reduce the load from the current 1/2 of the schedule to roughly 1/3.

The bigger problem is weaker divisions is the seeding.  Personally I would do away with automatic pass for the division winners.   The Cardinals should have played the Braves for the one game play-in (who had a worse record than BOTH WC teams), not the Dodgers.   If they won the Braves would then have to potentially face both the Dodgers and the Giants in order, rather than having the Dodgers and Giants eliminate each other.

The current system is like having Dmitri Medvedev and Novak Djokovic face each other in the first round of the  US Open, rather than the final.  Lame.
