Who will be our Arizona Fall League Selections?

Recommended Posts

I did see that the O's prospects will be playing for Scottsdale this year along with prospects from the Nationals, Diamondbacks, Rockies and Giants.

I'm going to be in the Phoenix area from November 7-18, and plan to go to a couple of games.

Went last year and got to see Strasburg pitch. Along with seeing a couple of our guys play. Saw Josh Bell, Brandon Snyder and Matt Angle.

I met Angle's father at the one game, and met Andy MacPhail at that game as well. Shook hands with MacPhail and he complemented me on my O's hat.

I was just wondering if anybody knew who the players from our organization would be that will be playing or when it will be announced?

My guess would be after the minor league season is done.

I'm guessing we send Avery and Hoes (hence the AA time), Beato, Adams, and Mahoney.

Assignments are already starting to be announced as the Cubs announced Archer, Johnson, and Vitters are going to the AFL.

Also, I don't believe the selections are 100% up to the Orioles. They do need to fill out a roster so someone may get left home so that there can be an extra arm in the pen or something like that. From Wikipedia:

Each August, Major League Baseball clubs hold a position draft to determine the players who will go to Arizona.

I don't think both Avery and Hoes will go and I think it's a possibility that neither one of them goes. Henson and Adams should both go in my opinion, as both players have had good years and both need to be added to the 40 man roster so I'm sure the O's would like to see how they do in the AFL. I think Mahoney gets the nod as well.

I don't see Spoone going. He's wearing down as it is and I think the O's are being very cautious with him.

I don't know how many the teams are allowed to send. While Hoes and Avery could use the development time and would be real good selections, I think the Club has to look at some bubble guys.

My first bubble would be Rowell for sure. Add Adams, Hoey and Beato. Give Adams about 100,000 practice balls at second and see if he can improve his fielding.

Guys to get development time would be Miclat for sure and probably Angle (unless he could play in PR or someplace which is advanced). Also Mahoney for sure.

Possible Henson over Angle. I was thinking about him, too.

I'd like to see Adams play some third and particularly left if possible. Old Ryan pounds LH pitching at a .340 clip and slugs .527. Could he turn into some sort of role player at the ML level?? Originally a SS, it would seem that he's a good enough athlete adjust to other positions.

IIRC, you can bring six from AA-AAA and add a seventh hi-A guy (and perhaps a second hi-A again because of Hawaii baseball going away?).

Here are my candidates:

AAA

Pitching

Pat Egan -- Good year, may want to see him facing prospects

Kam Mickolio -- Only because of the injury time, unless they want to rest him up, but he only threw 32 innings this season

Jim Hoey -- Is he back? Here's a chance to see

Hitting

Matt Angle -- Earned a chance to display his talent in the outfield

AA

Pitching

Pedro Beato -- Great year, let's see him against prospects to really test what he's been able to improve on

Wynn Pelzer -- Same, plus organization needs to see more of him

Pedro Viola -- Both comments above

Hitting

Joseph Mahoney -- Great year, can he hit against AAA level pitching?

Xavier Avery -- May be too soon to send him with only 11 AA games, but hitting .298 he probably deserves it regardless ;)

Question Marks

Tyler Henson -- Having a pretty rough August, may need to take some time off, even though he had a great first half.

Greg Miclat -- Possibility, but didn't really hit well in AA and might not want to expose him, even in this hitter's league

Caleb Joseph -- If they need a catcher, he would certainly be the guy, but he didn't really tear things up at the plate this year

Hi A

I guess Hoes is the one that qualifies, not only performance-wise but also having relatively few ABs this season...otherwise I just don't know

Will we want to send Dan Klein? We sent Arrieta and Matusz to the AFL the year they signed with us, even though neither had pitched in the minors yet.

Great choice! The rule actually says one player below AA level but doesn't say explicitly low-A...I hadn't realized that.

I'm not sure how these guys who were just drafted are treated. In 2008, we sent Matusz and also Brandon Snyder who at the time had been playing for Frederick.

Klein would be a great choice, but I wouldn't choose him over Hoes.

Something to keep in mind:

Teams that share an AFL club divide up positions, then pick who they want to send. @jsh2185: What's the process for AFL selection?

For once, the O's are going to be bidding on position player slots instead of pitcher slots for the AFL.
