Curious pick. Freshmen All American selection who had a severe sophomore slump, batting just .227 without any power. Despite struggling he drew 51 walks and had an OBP at .387.

As a freshman he slashed .294/.380/.420. Would think he'd want a chance to improve his draft stock, but he'd risk being a senior sign.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound, draft-eligible sophomore has already said he’s not going to sign with the club. “I really appreciate the Orioles drafting me, and I don’t take that for granted,” Toffey told Adam Sparks of The Tennessean on Saturday. “It’s an honor. But I don’t have any intentions of signing.” As a freshman last season, Toffey had a key two-run double in Game 1 of the College World Series championship series against Virginia.

Probably a good move. The young man should finish his education and then give pro ball a chance next year if he's given an opportunity. He can only improve his stock. The only risk he has is if he doesn't hit well again next year and then he might never get a chance to say he was a professional baseball player.

He's a junior next year right? Do they often go back and finish that fourth or fifth year of academics?

Toffey is a draft eligible sophomore, he'll absolutely have another chance to be drafted next year unless he fails to make any adjustments. I think he has the tools to succeed and be a pretty good pro, but the swing was never consistent enough and things really snowballed.

And yes, Vanderbilt players typically go back to finish their degrees. Jason Esposito was drafted in 2011 but walked for graduation the same year I did. I'm drawing blanks on the names, but 3 players from the 2014 National Championship team came back and graduated this May.
