  1. I don't really think any of McKenna, Urias, or Mateo are worth a huge amount of consernation over, but I think you can make a reasonable argument for any of them deserving to be off the team. None of them are particularly good; Urias regressed offensively and his 2.7 WAR in 2022 feels fluky because it's driven by a defensive performance that is wildly out of line with his career numbers. On top of that he has almost perfect positional overlap with Westburg, who also happens to be younger, cheaper, and better at most baseball things than Urias. I can certainly understand why you'd protect McKenna over the other 2, since he's younger and he's made incremental improvements to his offense to go along with his defense. I think it's reasonable to wonder how much of Mateo's bat falling off a cliff is bad luck vs his skills degrading. If you think he's degraded then it's easy to kick him off the roster. If you think he can get back to being an 80-85 wOBA guy then he might be worth rostering, especially considering he has more positional flexibility than the other 2 guys. I would have liked to see us trade someone with actual value to another team, like Hays or Mountcastle, and hope that Cowser/Kjerstad/Mayo step up in their place. I kind of feel like the decision to keep or part ways with Mateo/Urias/McKenna is inconsequential in comparison. If any of those guys get significant playing time, either someone crazy happened with their development, or something's gone horribly wrong with the team.
  2. I think that Holliday's the only one, maybe Westburg in a pinch for short stints, that I'd trust at SS. Urias has been pretty bad there. Since I expect Holliday to be the starting 2B, I think you'd want a backup option that doesn't involve moving over one of your starters. If Westburg's that guy then sure we don't need Mateo, but I'm not really convinced. His arm strength is worrisome and I don't know if he's going to make up for it with range the way we'd expect Holliday to. We could find a deal for Urias too. I don't think the return for either player is going to be significant though. Maybe a 45-ish high volatility prospect you take a flyer on, or a relief pitcher prospect.
  3. Well, he also has the advantage of being able to back up either CF or SS. McKenna's more limited as a utility/backup guy. I agree he's the better hitter and better outfield defender.
  4. His overall outfield innings were at 141, which isn't a lot, but it's certainly enough to let us know that he's not going to kill us. The bar here is pretty low for the 26th man on the roster that might need to spell someone for a few games at a time. Is he going to win a gold glove? Of course not, but he doesn't have to.
  5. Are you worried about his outfield throwing mechanics? Because his statcast velo numbers from the infield suggest that he will have no problem with his velocity in the outfield.
  6. Last year's trial in CF wasn't his first foray there in the majors; the Padres ran him in the outfield in 2021 as well. He didn't look great last year, but I'll attribute that to getting acclimated to the position midseason and having some tough chances. He actually had a positive OAA number in the outfield in 2021.
  7. I think there's merit to waiting till the deadline and seeing what happens. If the wheels fall off we can run out the prospects and see if they're going to stick. If we're in contention we can better assess our needs. Elias has shown he's willing to make trades, but he's also shown that he's unwilling to do more than absolutely necessary to remove unneeded depth from the farm system. I don't know if I agree with continually keeping the farm system a hair under overflowing at all times, but I'm willing to wait till the deadline when our needs will be more obvious, and I'm willing to pay a premium for talent at that point.
  8. I was interested in pitching for the O's too. My agent is still waiting for the call back.
  9. Hays has lost a step in the outfield and I never got the sense that range was Cowser's strength. He's got a cannon, though.
  10. Did Armbruester face any major league batters? 3 innings, 4 Ks seems quite impressive, and according to one source he only needed 19 pitches for that?
  11. Is it me or did Cowser's home run swing there seem a bit shorter than last season? He had a really long swing last year it felt like.
  12. Is he saying this because he likes Gunnar's defense more than the other two, or because he likes Gunnar overall more than the other two? Liking Gunnar more overall is indeed high praise considering how much of a rock star Carroll was.
  13. Dr. Neal ElAttrache authored a paper on PRP therapy for UCL tears. One thing that stuck out was that pro and even college throwers are rarely eligible for PRP therapy because it's not common for UCL tears for pro pitchers to be grade 1 or 2 and thus be a good candidate. The study mentioned that 4 out of 6 professional pitchers did return to play at their previous level or higher. 14. None. If you required surgery at any time within 5 years of the initial injection it was counted as an unsuccessful treatment. However, a high percentage of the successful nonsurgical treatments required a second PRP injection and took 6 months or more before returning to play. 15. Maybe MLB would try to find a buyout option to waive this provision?
