I’m almost certain that Ortiz and Hall were not the only guys discussed with the Brewers. If we can get Devin Williams without including Holliday, Basallo, Mayo, Westburg, and one of Cowser/Kjerstad, then I’d be up for it. I would then get Montgomery or Snell which cushions the blow if we can’t get Burnes back for 25 and beyond. Kremer, Mountcastle, Hays expendable for right player(s). Norby, Kremer and Hays for Williams would be nice

What about expanding it to include Emanuel Clase? Santander, Kremer and Beavers for Bieber and Clase? After 2005 (when Bautista has been back for a year), we can possibly trade Clase for a prospect. We can still trade (Cowser or Kjerstad), Povich & Bascome for Burnes. Rotation would be solid with Burnes, Bieber, Rodriguez, Bradish & Means

I think I would make a couple of changes. I think Toronto should go to the East (Northeast) Division. Then Pittsburgh should go to the North Division. Philadelphia should then be in the mid-Atlantic. I think I could be convinced to swap the Charlotte and Nashville expansion teams. Although it may work better if it was Charlotte/Nashville/Louisville in the mid-atlantic and New Orleans in the Southeast. The other divisions, I suppose would be: Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, St Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, {Las Vegas} Athletics, San Francisco Giants Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels, Arizona Diamondbacks

Another forgotten prospect who can give us 12 players is Seth Johnson, depending on how he comes back from TJ as he should still be considered a prospect. Also a good distance away but can only wonder where Luis Almeyda fits in, in regard to our top 30 list.

I agree with those five but with two rookies, two guys in their second year and Means coming back from injury, we will be sure to see a six man rotation at that point and that means either Gibson or Irvin will be the 6th. My bet is Irvin, with Gibson going somewhere via trade.

I think Mateo at shortstop is ideal for 2023 over bringing in somebody else for a variety of reasons: Holliday is our future shortstop, maybe as soon as mid-2024. So we don't need a long term contract on a shortstop. Based on 1 above, no point in playing Henderson at short for a year and a half when it is likely that his future is at 3rd base with Holliday at shortstop. DEFENSE. His defense will result in less hits and more double plays which means more outs and less pitches for our pitchers. His range does wonders for our pitching staff. He and/or Urias will have value as utility guys when we have Westburg/Norby, Henderson and Holliday in the infield. Of course, Ortiz and Westburg/Norby can fill the utility role by mid-2024, if not sooner. Not sure he has great trade value. That said, if we can get good value in a trade for Mateo and we won't lose anything defensively between Ortiz and Mateo, I'm all for trading him to get better starting pitcher.

I know this won't really be a huge impact, but I think the left handed bat to replace the O'Hearn/Diaz carousel could be Mike Moustakas. His OPS is certainly much better against righties than vs lefties. I think he could be a solid guy off the bench, platooning a bit with Mountcastle and can fill in a role at DH too. He shouldn't cost much since Cincy is on the hook for his $22M he is still owed. Thoughts?

He is basically a 3.5 WAR guy over 162 games. I think Mullins is better than that and I don't think his replacement is necessarily here. I would have liked this deal more when there were good options out there to replace him. Not sure that still exists. Lopez, who I really like, replaces Wells/Means at this point and holds Hall out of the rotation for the year assuming team health. I would prefer to jettison Gibson but that's not happening. Considering health, I would rather roll with Rodriguez, Bradish, Kremer, Means, Gibson/Wells/Hall (to see what we have in Hall) and keep Mullins than bump one of Bradish, Kremer or Means or go with a 6 man rotation and have McKenna in centerfield with more DH time for Frazier/McCann/Urias. If we got Lopez for Stowers or preferably Hays, I'm good there. Would have been ok with Mountcastle for Lopez if Josh Bell was still available. Otherwise, I roll with what we've got. Probably win around 70-74 games this year but get a ton more questions answered for the future. Signing Eovaldi for a year or Wacha at a lesser amount is about the only starting pitching move I would make if we aren't going top tier. Mullins defense helps the pitchers and defense is about 70% of the pitching stat line.

The 32 was meant more as scheduling for 32 starts, essentially being one time through the rotation. If he misses a few starts that is when Voth and Hall get a spot start, depending on who is up when we need them. Didn't really mean to imply he would get 32 starts. The next 5 guys, would rotate through the 2, 3 & 4 spots. If any miss starts, maybe one of those guys can pick up the extra spot starts or, again Voth and Hall. The last spot could be split someway between Lugo/Stripling going one+ time through the lineup and/or match-up, etc. and the other relieving. They could also take turns starting for a few times through and the other in the bullpen and spot starting. When Means is ready, he would send both Lugo and Stripling to the bullpen unless they are needed to spot start. Having 5 solid relievers and 9 guys as starting options would be truly ideal since everybody is so young and might have innings limits. Carrasco and Gibson are free to leave as a free agent in 2024 and we have growth from the other 7 guys (Rodriguez, Means, Bradish, Wells, Hall, Kremer, Voth) while still having Lugo and Stripling.

I was thinking of posting same thing. Is Hays too little? Is Santander too much? Either way trading one of them and having an outfield of Stowers, Mullins, Hays/Santander would be at least status quo. Maybe add a lefty OF/DH until Cowser is ready. Rutschman can dh against lefties where the lefty acquisition sits. Perhaps when Westburg comes up, Urias is part-time DH, also. Maybe Michael Brantley could be that "affordable" one-year left-handed bat. To "solve" the rest of the pitching, I would go with two swing-men on two year contracts to give flexibility and help with limiting innings as needed. I would sign both Ross Stripling and Seth Lugo. Our pitching would then be: Carlos Carrasco -- 32 starts Kyle Bradish, Kyle Gibson, Tyler Wells, Dean Kremer, Grayson Rodriguez - 20 starts each Seth Lugo, Ross Stripling, John Means - 10 starts each There will be some injuries/set-backs. Guys like DL Hall and Austin Voth will be there to fill-in and work out of the pen. By 2024 all of those guys should be able to up their workloads and Lugo and Stripling can fall back into full-time bullpen roles and spot starter. Nobody would be taxed and the bullpen would be fairly loaded. When the guys above don't start they will work out of the pen. It also wouldn't restrict us from making a deal if the right starter comes up at the break.

Of course the difference between Mateo and Correa is very much based on which version of each that you are getting, for one. Is Correa really 5.4 WAR or is he the 7.2 WAR player over 162 game average. Is Mateo the 3.4 WAR that he showed last year or the 2.1 WAR he has shown over a 162 game average in his career. Now Mateo was a different player in a different role than he was when he was putting up putrid results in 2021 and before. But it isn't difficult to imagine that Correa has twice as much value as Mateo. And they are basically the same age. Secondly, at least for 2023, Mateo can settle in at 2nd base or Urias can and it is the improvement over Odor that is more the result. And if one of Mateo or Urias can net us something in a trade that would be great. Perhaps Mateo, Correa, Henderson, is 2nd-3rd with Urias as a utility until Holliday is ready. Then guys like Norby, Ortiz and Westburg can be very good trade chips (along with Santander or Hays) that help bring back the likes of Pablo Lopez. Then you are talking about adding Lopez and Correa instead of Lyles and Odor and still not really breaking the bank. Could still sign Jameson and a quality bullpen arm. Thirdly, whatever you want to believe about Correa, what I really like about him is how he understands the game, especially the extreme analytics. He gets it better than most players do. Watch an interview with him. Read some of the stuff he has talked about in regards to analytics. He will help other players understand it and get better as well. Now it is a lot of money and 7 years would be better but imagine having a team of Rutschman, Holliday, Correa, Henderson, Cowser and Mullins with other high upside parts throughout the lineup for the next 5 years, at least. Stowers, Mountcastle, Kjerstad, Mayo will either progress or we have to acquire other guys to fill those spots. Either way that is a good competitive offense.

Ok then no Sanchez. Or change Mountcastle for Santander or Hays, still no Sanchez.

What would everybody do this offseason? 1. I would sign Justin Verlander. Elias was with Houston when they brought Verlander in. Maybe there is a connection. He is the Ace pitcher to bring in this year. 2. Trade Mountcastle and Tate to the Marlins for Pablo Lopez and Sixto Sanchez. 3. Sign Seth Lugo and Will Smith for the bullpen. Shouldn't cost a ton but will solidify the bullpen. 4. Sign Josh Bell to play 1st base. Switch hitter with pop and on base ability. Rotation: Verlander, Lopez, Rodriguez, Bradish, Kremer/Means (when ready). Keep Verlander and Lopez on 5 man rotation but the other guys swing between rotation/bullpen with guys like Lugo/Hall/Voth/Wells to lessen the innings burden, especially when Means gets back. Bullpen: Bautista, Perez, Lugo, Smith, Baker, Akin, Hall/Voth/Wells/Khrebel (these guys can be swing-men) Lineup: cf-Mullins lf-Hays 3b-Henderson C-Rutschman 1b-Bell dh-Santander rf-Stowers 2b-Urias ss-Mateo I would prefer to trade Urias and/or Mateo and/or Hays and/or Santander for one better high quality hitter with Ortiz, Vavra, Westburg, Cowser and perhaps Kjerstad on the horizon. The offensive improvement comes from full seasons of Rutschman & Henderson and Bell over Mountcastle and potential trades around break if the prospects are ready. I'd love to take a chance on somebody like Bellinger or Gallo who may benefit from the new shift rules.

But who cares? Let's say all of that happens and we win 80 games (likely impossible). What does that do for us? In our division that is 5th place and haven't done much to bridge the talent gap. Everybody talks about how far our minor league system has come (which it has) but how many young star players do we have compared to our competitors? The ideal way to look at things is look at each of our competitors projected depth charts for 2025. We are miles behind with the youth and prospects those in our division have now. We have to get more major league ready players and not be so worried about 2022 or even 2023.
