I also don't think he is the type of player that ages well.

Curious about this opinion since he is having his career year at age 29 and his trend is up, OPS+ 94, 120, 121, 132 his past 4 seasons

I have said it in many posts, I think he has some Joey Bautista potential.

But he would need to be valued as a 1B/DH and not an outfielder.

He is in the middle of the period where most players improve. I thought it was obvious that I was taking about his long-term not his late 20's. I should have been more clear.

Maybe last year we were really two years away and we really just overachieved because of team chemistry and Bautista.  I don't see how taking Santa out of this lineup can be a good thing.  What are we going to do with 1B/DH next year.  Mounty and O'Hearn really can't be counted on for a team trying to win.

While agree that taking this year's Santander out of the offense would hurt. This is the only year that he has performed at this level. He's OPS is 37 points higher this year, than his avg. His OBP stinks and he goes cold for fairly long periods. He's had a couple of heaters that have padded his OPS. His career OPS+ is 114 and that is buoyed by this years 132. I am not saying he sucks or is even at a replacement level player. But he is a pretty flawed player who is not likely to repeat this year which has been pretty flawed as well. I like Santander and I think he provides valuable leadership. I just don't see him having the value that it will take to keep him. I also don't think he is the type of player that ages well.

Tbh I  wouldn't mind either one myself but Washington is with the Angels. Who knows maybe Dusty can be like Brice Broche and win here like he did in Texas last year. David Ross may deserve another shot.

    I wouldn't mind David Ross.

Speaking of technical questions, and obviously this will NOT happen but I am interested in how the technicalities work:   we are still responsible for the $1M buyout for not exercising the $13M team option.   So does that mean we could in theory exercise the $13M option and bring him back next year even though we DFA'd him?   Say he has a bionic arm replacement in October and we gave him a tryout and decide we want him back in 2025 for $13 million.

No, It is my understanding that he is now a FA. Any team that picks him up is on the hook for prorated minimum this year only. The O's owe him the buy out.

If they would make a change which I don't think they will the guy who was getting a lot of love around the league at one time was Carlos Beltran. Of course that was before he was part of the Astros scandal.

Someone on another thread mentioned a Dusty Baker/Ron Washington type. I would hate that.

How is it weird or unrealistic to say that their best players all under performing is more impactful than the injuries they’ve had? If you split it up between the first 75 games and last 76, Gunnar has dropped 2.1 WAR, Rutschman 2.8, O’Hearn 1.1, and Mountcastle 1.7. The position players were worth 15.9 WAR the first 75 games and have been worth 10.2 WAR since. The pitching was worth 10.9 WAR the first 75 games and has been worth 5.6 WAR since. So that’s 11 WAR difference (5.7 for the position players and 5.3 for the pitchers) with Rutschman, Henderson, O’Hearn, and Mountcastle accounting for 7.7 WAR between themselves.

The injuries do clearly play a part (among other things like luck, sequencing, etc). but I don’t see how it’s unrealistic to say the dramatic drop offs from those 4 guys (and hell Burnes too) is a bigger factor.

I would not look at these numbers in a vacuum. There many intangibles that come into play regarding the injuries that may have contributed to the drop in performance from players. Not to mention players like Adley that appear to be playing through nagging injuries.

Holliday and Mayo will probably be counted on as everyday players next year, and I'm just not sure that they'll be ready for it.

Outside of a week Holliday hasn't shown any major progression on defense or offense. I'm not questioning his ability or pedigree, just concerned about them handing him an everyday job in 2025.

Mayo...i don't know what to say. Obviously his reps haven't been as frequent,  but that's 2 positions with question marks.

I think Urias and Mateo will be almost guaranteed to be back next season. Perhaps a couple of the roll players on your list will as well.

I don't think that Mayo and Holliday will be counted on as everyday players, certainly not both of them and Mateo and Urias on the roster. I can see Holliday at 2B with Westburg at 3B with Urias and Mateo on the bench. I'm not saying they should be on the team but only 3 of Mayo, Holliday, Urias and Mateo make the team barring injury to someone else.

  8. I think he gets a pass due to injuries. Perhaps he should get a pass. But, I also think that he has made enough poor decisions even with reduced options that he could be on the hot seat. Pitching Dominguez in a tie game and then going to Aiken for the save is an example of his poor decisions.

Or could you get Lucas Erceg for a package of Seth Johnson, Chace, Norby, and Stowers? He could have been a shut down reliever this year and potentially converted to a starter next year.

I'm not familiar with him but I'll take your word for it.

Not saying you did,but the board did. Tanner Scott as per board is a no factor. It does not matter

Gotcha, unless they start scoring runs... that might be true.

Why would you rather have Tanner Scott? I thought our season was cooked for bear

I didn't say that. I have said that once you get in to the tournament, it's a craps shoot. Scott shortens the game and would likely/possible be the closer on this team. Bautista is back next year so the fact that he will be a FA is lessened I think. Just my opinion.

Infield (8) - Rutschman, McCann, O'Hearn, Holliday, Henderson, Mayo, Westburg, Jimenez/Urias

Outfield (5) - Mullins, Santander, Cowser, Kjerstad, Slater

Starting Pitching (4) - Burnes, Eflin, Suarez, G-Rod

Relief Pitching (9) - Kremer, Webb, Coulombe, Perez, Cano, Akin, Dominguez, Bowman, Soto

Missed Cut:  Urias likely still injured, Mountcastle likely still injured, Livan Soto, Cade Povich, Burch Smith, Craig Kimbrel

    Any changes?

I think they only carry 12 pitchers. It doesn't look like a lock that Westburg and GrayRod are back at least for the WC round.

I like your list but I am guessing that Bowman will be the odd man out. Maybe Akin because I don't know if they carry 4 LHP?

I think Rivera is a lock so that mean either Jimenez or Mayo goes and I am guessing it's Mayo. If Urias is back then it comes down to Rivera/Jimenez and I am going to guess that Jimenez stays.

I'm sure this was noted elsewhere, but Seth Johnson got rocked in his Phillies debut. 2.1 IP, 0 K, 9 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB.

I had not seen that. Thanks for posting.

Success, Ala hot dog.Hope I'm  wrong , starting to get a Manny Machado Vibe. Gunner is way better in the field than the last 3 months.

Your not wrong about the Manny vibe. His body language and facial expressions are not the best. He looks a little like our youngest son and so he is my wife's favorite player and I can't criticize him in front of her, so I can do it here. 😂

Tanner Scott a FA after this year, no time value.

I'd still rather have him this year. Unless Rogers and Soto improve drastically, they won't have any either.

The Stowers/Norby trade for Rogers isn’t even the worst deal we made. Johnson/Chace for Soto looks worse.

You can only have 13 position players on a 26 man roster. Stowers and Norby were never going to crack our top 13 other than up/down guys. Stowers was going to be out of options at the end of next season, thus giving him little value.

However… you do get to carry 13 pitchers. Chace and Johnson most certainly could’ve been in the mix there. Even as #5 SP. I mean look how much we’ve trade for Rogers/Irvin, and even Soto.

Injuries really forced Elias’ hand though. Sitting back and doing nothing would’ve been the risky play. Elias was able to keep the pitching staff afloat until the playoffs. It’s the hitting that was the issue. Maybe that’s why he made the puzzling Eloy move.

This one flew under the radar for me for a couple of days. I was stunned that they traded both for Soto. I really liked Johnson and he was so hyped when he came from Houston. I was thinking maybe he had not recovered well from TJ and they were "selling high." But that doesn't appear to me the case. I wonder if Chace, Johnson, Stowers, Norby gets you Tanner Scott instead? If so, I'd rather have him then both Rogers and Soto

I imagine there's a big increase in errors on defense that coincides with our struggles in the second half.  And not just by second-string players replacing injured starters. (cough*cough*Gunnar)

I don't understand why he started fielding everything one handed and on the run and then throwing on the run. He used to shuffle-shuffle-throw. But then he went to what I can run and gun. It's weird to me.
