I didn't say otherwise.  I just said that Pearce (implied given the context) thinks Manny is a better person than Thome.

Hyperbole is a thing people do. Hearing one off-the-cuff statement and concluding that Pearce has some concrete "Best Person In Baseball" ranking in his head is ridiculous.

I think he's going to be a bit below average on offense and defense at first and will rest in that zone between replacement level and league average.

I don't want to see umpires lose their jobs for a robot.  I think that would be detrimental long term to the game.

What we need to see is evaluation and accountability.  The umpires union, like many unions (I am in one), is going to end up hurting the whole to protect the worst few from accountability.  If we can track strike calling accuracy with the same technology would replace them with then do it, and penalize those who are inaccurate.

Yeah, I don't think human umpires are the problem. Some really old dudes who just aren't that good at their jobs keep getting rolled out there.

I think what will eventually happen is umpires will get virtual reality glasses - like Google Glass, but a better version - that helps the umpires see the strike zone from wherever they are standing. I don't think we'll see an electronic strike zone where there is a monitor behind the plate calling balls and strikes because its incredibly dorky and not fun. Most fans want to see the umpire going "STRRIIIKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEE THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE."

It’s hard to believe one of those guys was holding up the trade. Dodgers fans were pleased with the initial reports, they are thrilled by this.

Yeah, cause they're World Series contenders, still have a better farm system than the O's, just got LeBron, and live in California. I'd be thrilled too.

I cant believe I just subjected myself to reading this mess. This thread has brought out the dumbest of the dumb. Some of you need to be ashamed of yourselves.

Only the Hangout could have an 8 page thread of speculation about the character of people they know nothing about.

My three big takes on ST so far,

    1.  Sisco is going to rake this year. Maybe leadoff by May.

    2. Harvey might be ready, but Castro has earned the first month.  We are going to be following Harvey real close. He’s added the cutter and needs to work on the change.

    3.  Santander isn’t an obligation. He’s one of our 5 best OF’s.

What's Sisco's speed like? His bat is pretty good as a leadoff hitter if he can move on the bases.

It seems rare to me that a free agent acquisition ever ends up being worth the contract they receive. Can ya'll remember many that did? Maybe some small ones, but I am thinking the really big ones, like top tier?

As far as active players and their active contracts: Buster Posey, Joey Votto, Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout, Max Scherzer, Zach Grenkie, Justin Verlander, Jon Lester, Freddie Freeman, Cole Hamels.

But, then there are the Albert Pujols, David Price, Prince Fielder, Jason Heyward, Chris Davis, Matt Kemp, Troy Tulowitzki, David Wright, Shin-Too Choo, Josh Hamilton deals.

Seems like half and half. You could maybe also argue that long term deals are fine when you give them to a top-tier talent under 30 without an injury history. Otherwise, stay away. It seems historically that the future-"Hall-of-Famers'" first contracts are great, but the the second contracts are rough (Miguel Cabrera, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, etc.)
