  1. Not much for the normal MLB city but for Buffalo it will prove to be noticeable. Probably a better comp would be the Sabres.  If the Blue Jays were averaging 7,000 that would be about half the hockey night crowd.  Sahlen Field and Key Bank Arena are in downtown Buffalo, the Bills play out in Orchard Park.  Revenue from lodging the Blue Jays personnel and of course the visiting teams would be significant for a small market such as Buffalo.
Taking it all the way down to hiring,  a baseball home stand could support a full time work week for a bartender a dishwasher, a hotel housekeeper or a barista.   That would have been true even last year with no fans only teams in hotels.  Comparatively, one football game every other week gives a temporary spike over about a 36 hour period.

The biggest long term benefit to Buffalo, if they close to build on it, is the money the Blue Jays put into Sahlen Field.

If anyone wants a Thorne fix.

Yes please!  Thanks for the tip!

Gary with Keith Hernandez doing the color on the call for SNY.  Mets at Pirates and they are doing the call from Citi Field in NY so the Orioles are not the only team not sending their announcers on the road.  It ended up being a 3 1/2 hour 4-1 Pittsburgh win with a 29 minute rain delay in the 2nd inning.

Gary was a joy to listen to and as always brought the best out of his color partner.  There is no replacing his voice.  Of course there was the occasional gaffe like when he called the Mets the Orioles.  He caught himself quickly in the third inning after a batter walked and he said “two men on to start the inning for the Orio...METS”.  The second time coming out of commercial to start the top of the ninth it was inescapable when he said something like last chance for the Orioles then said, “sorry Mets” even Hernandez said Or-Oh!   Gary laughed and said “it was bound to happen.”
This is must TV for this weekend!   I mean unless you prefer Hanser Alberto’s Royals taking their turn with us.
Yeah, put Gary & Jim back together!

  3. John Means returns, pitches to expectations, and we never hear the words or phrases “tired arm”, “strain”, “wanted to give him an extra day” or “injured”  in the same sentence as his name!

Cedric Mullins continues his success and wins AL CF gold glove and silver slugger awards this year because.... Trout.

After seeing Reggie Smith as honorary coach at the All-Star game, I can dream that  Anthony Santander may aspire to that comp.

He has been in 83 of 85 games, though I don’t know how many games he started. I guess the days of a guy playing 160 are over.

So I guess you’ll be riding Rutschman as hard as Buck rode Wieters!
    They’re not action figures!

  5. I think this is a good thing because it takes Means out of the All Star Game convo.  Gives Mullins and Mancini better chances of selection.
And lest anyone has forgotten how Orioles’ aces get treated in the All Star Game........

    Cito Sucks!

  6. Confidence is hard to judge though.  Mullins is currently exhibiting cool confidence playing at an elevated level.  Exhibit A being the diving catch the other night.  He calmly flipped the ball to Stewart after the catch.  Compare to Hays and his exuberant chest beating after a couple of fence scaling catches last year.  Cockiness and confidence may intersect but are not the same things.

Weams, I don’t know you personally and though I joined the Hangout 15 years ago and check in multiple times daily year ‘round, I only have about 80 posts!   I long ago realized you were “the man” here and truth do tell when you upvoted me on a few of my random posts it was a special thrill!  Thanks!

Are we hurting McKenna’s development right now by using him only vs LHP, and then as a defensive replacement?  The guy was actually putting up decent numbers in AAA.

He might not be a top prospect, but we should have a vet filling the role that he’s filling right now. It’s kind of a waste.

Well if Hays can make it through his rehab (and I would max that out btw) McKenna will be back in Norfolk by July 1.  It’s the managers job to put him in the right spots while he’s here.  Hyde hasn’t buried him.

Who's the guy wearing Mountcastle's number today? Taking pitches and then hitting one with power.

Remember when Mancini was struggling as a young player after some early success?  He credited Trumbo with helping him out and getting back on track.  Maybe Mancini paid it forward, and that would be great!

    Game 38, May 14

Later in the inning, the O’s had runners on 1st and 2nd and Hays tried to score from 1B on a single one-hopper off the RF wall and was out by about 10 feet to end the inning.   The play wasn’t close and it was a terrible send by the 3B coach in my opinion.

    From Joe Trezza:

Compounding their offensive struggles was a self-inflicted wound on the basepaths, when Hays was thrown out trying to score on Mancini’s sixth-inning double into the right-field corner.

Running from first, Hays initially adhered to third-base coach Tony Masolino’s stop sign, after Juan Soto fielded the ball. Had his relay throw arrived cleanly, the Orioles would’ve had a second-and-third, one-out situation with cleanup hitter Santander coming to the plate, plus the platoon advantage against Strasburg. But then, wildness.

When Soto overthrew cutoff man Josh Harrison, Hays broke for home. He quickly regretted it, because first baseman Josh Bell was backing up the play. Bell corralled Soto’s throw and threw Hays out at the plate. Santander then struck out to end the inning, and the Orioles did not score.

“It’s not ideal aggression when you’re down two with Santander coming up,” Hyde said. “I kind of understand -- from my angle -- he hits the base, turns, finds the ball. That’s proper baserunning. He sees a high throw. He sees space between the first cut and Bell, and decided to go for it. I’m sure he would like to have stayed at third now looking back, but I kind of understood it at the time. But not an ideal spot.”

Said Hays: “I saw the ball go over the cutoff guy’s head, and initially I did not see Bell. It looked like it was rolling to the infield, and that was my initial read, so I took off to score thinking it was a loose ball. I was about halfway down the line when I saw Bell field it and I realized it was a bad read at that point.”

“Bad read” = Dead duck”  Twice in 8 days.

My question here would be did Masolino switch up and say “go go go” upon seeing Soto overthrow the cutoff man?   When Hays was told to stop, he did actually slow down and hesitate, shouldn’t it have become Masolino’s decision, not Hays’ to revise course?   Hyde needs to be having a talk with one of the two and it needs not include the “I kind of understand” narrative fed to the press.

Don't look now but Mancini leads the league in RBIs with 38.  Not bad for a guy that was in chemo last year.

He’s recovered (baseball-wise) beyond my wildest dreams.   Couldn’t happen to a better guy.

Bittersweet because Trey and the MLB Orioles seem to be on opposite trajectories, some team will want him badly in the next two months.

You might want to get the tickets in advance.   I don't know what their current % capacity is, but it could sell out.

    It's a 4:05 game.

Really!  Really!   These are both last place teams as we speak a quarter into the season,  and fans of both teams generally pooh-pooh the notion of any sort of “rivalry”.  Has something changed?   Comparing Kyle Schwarber to Ryan Mountcastle as left fielders has a bit of a niche appeal I guess.
You provided a really good write up of establishments near Nats park however and I compliment you on that. ?

    How’d Thorne do with that?

DRINK ................. responsively.  Hilarious, a professional comic! ?

Garceau didn’t have to do that interview,  I give him props for that.  I’m sure he didn’t think he was buying into calling games from monitors with players he has never encountered in locker room or hotel lobby situations.
Anyone out there who filled out the fan survey a year or so ago regarding media thinking “be afraid what you ask for”?
But really, I guess this is now the third year of the Orioles using Kevin Brown.  Not sure if anyone noticed about two weeks back when he worked with Hollander on the radio side that he would be excited to be off for awhile doing the Women’s Softball Collegiate WS (for ESPN, not mentioned).  The Orioles really need to get away from this “contract labor” approach to broadcasting.  Sign Brown to be the next “voice of the Orioles” and roll with him for the next few decades.  It’s MLB damn it,  your leading broadcaster leaving for awhile to do SOFTBALL!  Not quite like missing Sunday games to do Sunday Night Baseball.

Really was hoping to see Plutko go two innings (or more) last night when he relieved Kremer.  Not sure Hyde is comfortable with anything close to an “opener” strategy.  Always seems we need to see 4 or 5 of the usual suspects trying to close out games like it’s a playoff game.
