I think this shows that you can buy the playoffs, but not the championship. Anything can happen in a 5-game series, especially when you are talking about the top 8 teams. But when you are talking about 162 games, the big spenders are almost always going to be in the playoffs.

When you say higher ceiling, it seems like maybe you mean higher offensive ceiling. Like you said, Wieters has higher value because of his position and defense. So, to me, Wieters' ceiling is at least as high as Reimold's because he could fill arguably the most important defensive position (other than the pitcher, i suppose) for the next 10+ years.
