  1. I'm not really sure where to put this, but it's what I'm listening to right now, so I guess this thread will do!

My friends in Inter Arma just released a 2xLP on Relapse Records that's streaming on Pitchfork at the moment. It's been really fun playing and touring with these guys and watching them evolve over the years. If you are into any kind of metal I'd advise checking this out, as it runs the gamut. Even if you're not, and metal is not really my thing, I'd suggest giving it a try. It's a dynamic beast of a record, with classic rock undertones (The Long Road Home, which is my favorite song) as well as punk and experimental influences as well.

  2. CHROMATICS just released one of my most anticipated records of the year and it did not disappoint. Can't wait for the vinyl release. Italians Do it Better is one of my favorite non-punk labels right now. FFO: the Drive soundrack, dancing on quaaludes.

  3. A.R. & Machines

Great record. I have a bootleg 7". Will sell :)

  4. A decade ago I was given what I still think is the most terrifying record I've ever heard (and only now realize it's also one of the most beautiful), SWANS "Soundtracks for the Blind." Flash forward to 2011, and I drove for 10 hours to Lexington, KY to see them with a few of my good friends. Well worth the time and money.

They played a new song that moved me in a really inexplicable way. That's what I'm listening to right now.

  5. I just gave the whole disk a spin. Pretty nice stuff, I wasn't awed but I will agree that they are earnest about the music. Won't honestly be something I listen to a lot but I will keep it on hand and occasionally will give it a listen.

Certainly better then the vast majority of stuff getting cut these days.

Honestly it was the live show that got me hooked. This was the most anticipated release for me in a long time. I think it's great, but honestly the first LP might even be better.

My friend Mark has booked them twice in Richmond and he mentioned they should be stateside this summer. Can't wait.

  6. GRAVEYARD from Sweden might be the best band on the planet. Catch them before they blow up, with should be any minute now.

Their new album, Hisingen Blues, leaked earlier this week. If you are at all a fan of blues, classic rock, metal, or generally badass riffery, you must download this. Album of the year already. They might even sound better live, if it's even possible. All hyperbole is understatement.

  7. HERATYS!!!

  8. The My Bloody Valentine unreleased tracks that got leaked over the summer. Most MBV die-hards probably already have these songs but if anyone is interested you can download them here:

I sort of gave them a once over when I first downloaded them but I've been listening non stop for the last few days. They were probably written during the EP era between Isn't Anything and Loveless, which showed the band at their most creative. "Bilinda Song" is one of my all-time favorites.

  9. Excellent. And now for my next trick:

Awesome! My friend who's really into garage/psych got me into the Ponys a few years ago. I think I remember seeing that you were an Exploding Hearts fan. Are you into anything like Black Lips, Gris Gris, BBQ or Jay Reatard/The Reatards? The Marked Men? I guess some of those bands are a little more lofi and punk oriented. Garage/Psych isn't really my scene so I'm not sure which bands are well-liked and which bands don't get along.

Except I do know that the guy from Black Lips punched the guy from Wavves in the face or something like that.

Shifting gears a little bit but I've been really into this Swedish band called Graveyard. They totally nail that bluesy, psychedelic 70s heavy rock sound and they are absolutely nuts live. They've come through Richmond twice and and each time about 20 people who had no idea who they were left with a new favorite band. It's great. Scott, you might be into it?

  10. You should give a heads-up if/when you play in NYC again. I'd love to come out. And I can contribute to full-on drunken disorientation. Frankly, it's what I'm best at. (Better at getting other people there than myself. Damn tolerance.)

I'll definitely let you know. I'll be on tour in January but we're heading south. I imagine we will be back to NYC some time in the next few months though. Drunken debauchery awaits!

I suppose I've rebelled against that look out of necessity: (i) job won't tolerate it; (ii) can't grow a beard; (iii) need shower to function. As for PBR, irony isn't really enough to get me to drink bad beer, but I don't actually mind PBR that much. That said, I'm the guy at the indie rock show drinking bourbon and looking like he just showed up from a law firm. Mostly because I did. It's great when you can rebel against orthodoxy by simply representing another orthodoxy. Viva la difference. Etc.

    Classic.

In my mind I don't really fit that description either. I'm too baby faced to grow a legitimate beard so I keeps it clean. I now have a steady job where I dress business casual. I have been prone to drinking PBR over the years but that's mostly due to extreme poverty. No irony there at all. Seriously. Really poor.

I've always been a bourbon man though and now that I've got a steady cash flow I've been stocking up on Knob Creek and Woodford Reserve.

  11. Well, I am from Brooklyn, it's true. And I have recently been on a bit of a low fi-ish, scuzzed out kick, though it has its limits. I love when it's heavy but melodic (Times New Viking) like it less when it's just a means of covering up amateurism. I don't mind amateurism, mind you. Just don't cover it up. ;)

That said, I don't find the scene in Brooklyn (at large) all that homogenized. Though perhaps just because I'm locked in. Or because I don't live in Billyburg.

I'm sure it's not. That's something that's always easy to say from an outsider's perspective.

It's probably much easier to say that about Richmond.

Like...everyone here rides tall bikes, drinks PBR, has a beard, listens to Municipal Waste and either showers once a week or gives the appearance of showering once a week.

I wish we had bars that gave away free pizza with every beer though. Fantastic.

  12. :P Cool. But my other question stands. Where'd they get that awesome bottom? There's no bass player on the video. I guess he/she could be all off-camera, but I doubt it...

That song is so... full. So heavy. It has to have some bass from somewhere. Like Geddy Lee/Ray Manzarak bass pedals?

EDIT: And I watched that video a second time third time... but who's counting... Frame by frame. To see if he was really playing a bass for the whole thing. It's 6-strings. ;) Could be a six-string bass but I don't think so.

The LP has a nice, warm, noisy/shoegazy sound. From what I can make out it looks like the guy plays out of a guitar stack that slaves to a bass rig as well. He probably uses a line selector to toggle between the amps/use them simultaneously.

    EDIT: Yeah, like this:

    <a href="http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=83410855&albumID=2574137&imageID=42765618"><img src="http://hotlink.myspacecdn.com/images02/59/d5b280a5d687429bbe58fd62b42e89f7/m.jpg" alt="friendship cove (montreal)" /></a>

  13. You were in the band? Awesome song! Which is you?
And I see no bass player... where'd you get that awesome sound, that bottom?

Haha no, no not in that band! I was just giving Jim a little bit of crap for the Brooklyn indie scene being relatively homogenized. I do like that song, though.

  14. CRIMINAL DAMAGE - S/T LP (Amazing Portland-based throwback punk. Think BLITZ and even 77 punk/oi but darker and heavier. Think Japanese Hardcore played at half the speed with more melodic vocals.)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzwmBYoq7Z4

THE MARKED MEN - Ghosts LP (Ridiculously catchy garage/power pop/pop punk with super snotty vocals. I dubbed a tape that has been the soundtrack to my work commute every day for the past two weeks)

SWANS - Soundtracks for the Blind (No words to describe SWANS. This is the most terrifying and beautiful album ever made.)

CURTIS MAYFIELD - CURTIS (THE MAN)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lhvrHWtWHU&feature=related

FRANKIE BEVERLIE AND MAZE - MAZE FEAT. FRANKIE BEVERLY MAZE (Been jammin' "I Need You" since I found out it was sampled on Young Jeezy's "Talk to 'Em.")

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK_Z6DVP2dI

BLACK FLAG - Nervous Breakdown 7" (Still the best punk EP ever.)

I don't wanna worry about dyin'.

You must be from Brooklyn ;)

Just some friendly ribbing, but this is what every band sounded like when we played at the charleston. I'm also pretty sure everyone in the crowd was wearing v-neck shirts and fedoras. We more or less cleared out the basement when we started playing. The only person we didn't know who liked us was the sound guy. He fed us whiskey at the bar until we didn't remember where we were and then gave us all of the door money, so that was cool.

Williamsburg does have some pretty ladies...

  16. Busted! :D

At least you all can't blame it on just me. After watching that tonight' date=' now I know why you all drink. :P[/quote']

Paul!!! Let's trade. You go to my Ethical Theory, Jesus Christ in the New Testament, and Advanced Logic classes tomororw (and go through the torture of watchgng the Orioles paly baseball) and I will find new and exciting ways to blow your 300K paycheck Sidney Ponson style! It won't cure my drinking problem, but at least it will make things interesting! (?)
